Description

Patented July 14, 1931 NETE STATES FRED LINDQUIST AND ORA L. NAVE, 0F SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA LOCK Application led August 27, 1929. Serial No. 388,796.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in locks, and especially to a lock casing and the method of mounting the same in the device with which it is to be associated, such as a door, drawer or the like and has for its prima-ry object to eliminate the usual joining work required in the'mounting of a lock casing and to form a cut out at the edge of the member, in the present instance illustrated asV a door with the lock casing set into the cut out at the edge of the door and suitably secured or retained in position.
lVith the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings z- Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevational view of a door equipped withthe improved lock casing mounted therein in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevational view of a part of the door with the lock casing mounted in the edge thereof showing the anchoring screws for securing the lock cas ing to the door;
Figure 3 is an edge elevational view of the door with the lock in position;
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Figure 2; showing the removable side plates for the lock casing and the ornamental cover plate therefor;
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Figure 8;
Figure Gis an edge elevational view of the lock casing; and
Figure 7 is a top plan view of the lock casing.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, the reference numeral 1 indicates a door equipped with a lock cas*V ing 2 that is set into an edge cut out in the door with the lock casing having its face plate in the same plane with the door edge and side plates or walls at opposite sides of the door. This construction eliminates the necessity' ofboring openings transversely i through the-door and it is possible to provide a comparatively rough cut in the door edge yfor the receptionjof the lock casing as the latter is provided with side flanges on opposite sides to overlie the door around the cut out or opening. Y
The specific lock mechanism does not enter into the gist offthis invention, the main idea being in mounting the lock casing at the edge ofthe door in an edge cut out, the lock casing comprising a side wall 3, a bottom wall 4, anedge wall 5 provided with the usual openings 6 lfor projection bolts 7 and a removable opposite side wall 8.V The removable side wall 8 is anchored to the lock casing by screws 9 passing therethrough and entering threaded lugs 10 upon the bottom and edge walls4 and 5 respectively as shown in detail in Figure 4. The upper and lower ends ofthe'lock casing are closed by end walls 1l forming a rectangular lock casing with a removable side wall. The side walls 3 and 8 of the lock casing are provided with eXtension flanges 12 with their vertical sides adjacent the bottom wall 4 while said side walls are further provided at their upper and lower ends with eXtension flanges 13. The door 1 is provided with a rectangular cut out edge opening 14 as will be clearly understood from an inspection of Figures 2 and 3 and the latch casing is set into the opening and when so disposed, the side flanges 12 and 13 upon the side walls 8 and 8 overlie adjacent portions of the door 1 outwardly of the cut out opening 14.
The lock casing is retained in the opening by relatively long screws 15 headed at their outer ends and passing through the edge wall 5 and bottom wall 4 respectively to enter the door 1 as shown in Figures 2 and 4, the end extensions 5a of the edge wall 5 having screws 16 passing through openings 17 in the extensions 5a and entering the edge of the door as shown in Figures 2 and 8. The opposite sides of the lock casing are covered by ornamental face plates 18 formed of brass or any preferred material and are secured in position by the fastening screws 19 entering the end extensions 13 of the lock casing and the door 1.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent,` it being noted that the lock casing is set into an edge cut out in the door 1 Which greatly facilitates mounting thereof. It is unnecessary to bore special openings in the door for the mounting of the look Which has heretofore been customary and a compara- A tively rough cut may be made in the edge of the door and completely covered and hidden from view by the lock casing set into the edge cut opening.
Vhile there is herein shown and described thepreferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
We Claim A lock casing adapted to be inserted in a notched portion of the free edge of a door, and consisting of a rectangular housing composed of edge Walls, a side Wall and top and bottom Walls formed of an integral casing, with projecting flanges to embrace and overlap the door and having a removable side Wall secured to the front and back Walls and having escutcheon plates attached to the side plates.
In testimony whereof We alhx our signatures.
