Description

' A.POPPENHUSEN.
1B .AIi'ID-COINIB. No. 169,578. I Patented 11017.2,1875.
' NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPH POPPENHUSEN, OF COLLEGE POINT, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAND-COMBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,578, dated November 2, 1875; application filed June 21, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it kno wn that I, ADOLPHPOPPENHUSEN,
of College Point, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Band or Long Combs, of which the following is a specification This invention is an improvement on those kinds of combs which are known-as band or long combs, and as combination side combs; and has for its purpose, by means of movable wings or pieces attached to such combs, to enable the comb to be better kept in position upon the head, and also to furnish a means by Which to confine the hair at the back of the head, and keep it in neater and better condition.
Figure lis a side perspective view of a long comb having such wings or pieces attached thereto. Fig. 2 shows the manner of applyin g or wearing such improved comb.
The invention consists in attaching to each end of the comba projecting piece or wing, which is pivoted to, and movable upon, the comb, so that it can be placed at different inclinations to the comb, and which also furnishes a means of attaching thereto a bow or ribbon, by which the back hair can be confined, and which can also be made ornamental as a head-dress.
A represents an ordinary long comb, made of rubber. or other material, having teeth formed upon it for its whole length or such comb may be a combination side comb, so called, formed with teeth only upon its ends, the center being without teeth. To each end of such comb is pivoted a wing or projecting piece, B, which has motion on the pivots l 1,
so that such pieces can be placed atdifferent inclinations to the comb, and thus be worn higher or lower upon the back of the head, as desired,-one position being shown in Fig. 2. These pieces B may beplaced atthe ends of the comb A, or at some little distance therefrom,
and may be fastened either upon the inside or outside of the comb, and may be plain, or formed with embossed or ornamental surfaces, as desired. In the outer ends of such pieces B are (or may be) made openings 2 2, to receive a ribbon, O, or other fastening, which may be used to'coniine the hair, or may be made ornamental as a head-dress.
The ribbon may be passed under the hair, and through the openings 2 2, and then tied over the back hair, or may be put entirely over such back hair, as preferred, the wings B acting to keep the hair inplace.
The m'ovable pieces or wings B, instead of 7 being simply pivoted to the comb, as described, may be formed with slots, as indicated by the dotted lines 3 3, so that such wings or parts can be made adjustable as to their length, as well as have motion about the pivot or fastening 1.
I am aware that it has been heretotore proposed to attach an elastic band to the ends of a semicircular comb, and I therefore make no claim to such band, nor to devices for securing it to the ends of the comb.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination and arrangement, with a band-comb, or other comb of similar construction, of the movable pieces or Wings B B, pivoted tov the ends of the comb, and provided with the slots 2 2, or other device by means of which theirouterends may be connected together, substantially as and for the purposes forth.
2. Thecombination and arrangement, with a bandcomb, or other comb of similar construction, of the movable pieces or wings B B,
provided with the slots 3 3, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ADOLPH POPPENHUSEN.
