GATE HINGE.
Application filed May '7,
This invention relates to hinges for gates and the like, having reference more especially to hinges for gates ofthe class in which heavy wire fabric is supported'by and wlthm a rectangular frame structure of metal work.
An object of-my invention is to prov de a strong and reliable hinge construction whereof the relatively movable members can be readily associated and attached to the gate frame and the adjacent supporting post, respectively.
Another object of my invention is to provide a hinge connection wherein the pintle or pivot between the relatively movable members can be nicely adjusted, within limits, in relation tothe gate post in order to ensure the correct hanging or positioning of the gate. Y a a WVi'th these and other objects in view my invention comprises novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafterdescribed and claimed.
In the drawings 1 v Figure 1 is a sectional plan of the upper v portion of a gate equipped with a hinge em bodying my invention. I
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1. 7
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the hinge, as on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sections, as on the line 4-4: of Fig. 2, showing different positions of adjustment of the 'pintle and its eccentric bearing.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a portion of the upper horizontal rail of a gate frame, and 11 designates a portion of one of the vertical members thereof, it being understood that the top and bottom rails are or may be of the same construction, and
. that the vertical members at the respective ends of the frame also are or may be of the same construction.
12 designates interlooped or interwoven open wire fabric, of the chain link type, which is secured to and held under tension between the respective members of the frame.
The particular gate frame construction herein illustrated is similar to that described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,283,359 dated October 29, 1918, wherein the rail comprises a stout metal tube, and each end member comprises two connected channel bars arranged back to back and in spaced relation to each other, the respective pairs i927. Serial no. 129,474.
of bars having affixed thereto at or, near each jacent supporting post 1 1, and the element B being atlixed to the adjacent end of the gate frame. 1
The element A comprises two counterpart members 15 having internal semi-circular conformation at one end, which members when secured together provide a circular clamping opening therebetween. Extending from the members 15 are arms 16, which are adapted to embrace the gate post. The gmembers 15 are secured together andat the same time the arms 16 are firmly clamped to thepost by means of a diagonally disposed through bolt 17 which-extends through the members adjacent the bases of the arms. "In the present instance thesearms are angularly related and are provided at'their outer or free ends with retaining'lips 18, so that the arms can be readily applied and clampedto the sides of a tubular post 14 of square crosssection, as shown.
Fitted in the circular opening afforded by the members 15 is a cylindrical member 19, the'ends of which extend exteriorly' of the opening and are formed with polygonal heads 20 to which a wrench or similar tool can be readily applied. The member 19 is formed with a bore 21 eccentric to its longitudinal axis, and hence by loosening thebolt 17 and turning the member 19 about its axis, the bore 21 can be adjusted to any desired position about the axis, and then by tightening the saidbolt, the member 19 can be effectually secured in the position of adjustment.
The element B comprises a base or block portion 22'which is fitted snugly between the outwardly projecting ends of the cheek memcheek members, the rail and the leg 23. The opposite side of the block 22 is provided with an outwardly and rearwardly extendin arm 25 the free end of which is forme with a perforation 26 that registers with the eccentric bore of the cylindrical member, and a pintle27 passing through such perforation and bore hlngedly connects the two elements A, B.
From the foregoing it will be seen thatmy invention provides a simple and efficient hinge member, the axis of the pintle whereof can be adjusted with ease and facility, to insure the correct hanging of the gate; that is to say, by varying the position of the pintle the gate can be set with extreme nicety toward or from the post, as the size of the gate opening may require, or the pintle of one hinge may be ad ustedwith relation to that of the other hinge in order to secure the efficient co-operative relation of the two hinges.
A hinge embodying my invention is slmple and efficient, and the parts thereof, which are relatively few, can be readily assembled and applied to the gate and its support.
It is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the details of construction herein disclosed as the same may be modified Within the principle of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim-- 1. A gate hinge comprising two elements whereof one is composed of two parts with an opening therebetween, an eccentric member mounted for rotative adjustment in said opening, means for clamping the said eccentric member between said parts, and a pivotal connection between the other element and the eccentric member.
2. A gate hinge comprising two elements whereof one is composed of two parts with an opening therebetween, arr-eccentric member mounted for rotative adjustment in said opening, a bolt adjustably clamping the said parts against the eccentric member, and a pivotal connection between the other element and the eccentric member.
3. A gate hinge comprising two elements, one of which is composed of two parts having their opposin faces formed to provide an opening there etween and having also two extendmg clamping armsadapted'to embrace a post, an eccentric member mounted for rotative adjustment in said opening, a bolt adjustably connecting the said parts to clamp the eccentric member in adjustedposition and also to clamp the arms against the post, and a pivotal connection between the other element and the eccentric member.
4. A gate hinge having two elements whereof one includes clamping means for engaging a post and the other includes clamping means for engaginga gate, a connection for the two elements comprising a pintle and a rotative adjusting member having an axis of rotation eccentric to the axis of the pintle, one of the said elements being formed of two parts with a circular opening therebetween for the reception of the rotative member, and a bolt extending through said parts between the circular opening and the adjacent postclamping means andoperative to clamp the latter to the 0st andalso to clamp the rotative member y and between the walls of the circular opening.
