The object of the invention is to provide improvements in toilet articles, comprising l combs and razors and more particularly in the suitable combination of two such articles, so that they can be used either independentl of, or in combination with, e'ach other.
Willen mens hair has not been trimmed .for several days, the ends generally show an irregularity or raggedness, but such a condition is not corrected as a rule until the hair as a whole needs cutting, or retrimmin'g. In the meantime, a mans appearance becomes less and less attract-ive, whereas with the present device he is able himself to keep his hair in first class condition, so that it constantly appears to have been but newly cut and trimmed.
With women a similar condition has developed since the advent of bobbed hair, and each girl or lady frequently wishes that she might be able to put her hair in iirst class shape, without having to visit a barber to have the ent-ire head gone over. However, since a womans hair is generally thicker than a mans, the comb for her use is preferably provided as heretofore with 'longer teeth, providing a greater depth between them, while the means for supporting and operating the razor are the same.
Another object is to provide for the use of the blade upon the outslde of the comb, when for instance, trimming of the shorter hair of the neck is desired, while in this latter position the blade is also adapted for use for shaving the face and neck in the usual manner, and after such use to be sheathed within and protected by the comb.
A further object is to provide an improved method of making the present combination comb and razor, wherein the chamber within the former for retaining the latter is obtained by forming the comb first by flattening a tube about a suitable core or form, and then cutting the necessary teeth laterally in the collapsed tube.
Still another object is to providea specially designed'means for removably securing the blade to the outside of the comb, while it is desired to use it in this position, said means being eiiicient yet comprising no material obstruction to the free use of the device.
And 'still further details of construction are fully brought out in the-followin description, when read in conjunction wit the accompanying drawin s, in which Fig. 1 is 'e Perspective View ,0, e hollew .tube from which the comb is formed; Fig. 2"i's asimilar- I View of the tube flattened u n a suitably. yshaped core; 3 is a horizontal section thru the same; ig. 4 is a plan view of one embodlment of the invention and of a shape most convenient for use by men; Fig. 5 is a section' on the line 5--5 of Figi 4; Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Fig'. 5; Fi 7 is an enlarged fragmentary section on the ine 7-7 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 8 is a plan'view of a comb, having a. shape especially adapted for use by adles, and also embodying the present inveiiion.
Referring to the drawin s, in the manufacture of theimproved comi, a hollow tube 1 1s flattened upon a'core 2, (as shown in Fig. 2), which thereafter is withdrawn and the resultlng blank slotted to form the usual teeth .3, which extend well into the body of the deyice and intersect the central-.recess 4, which 1s adapted to contain any suitable type of so-called safety razor blade 5, having opposltely directed cutting edges 6, and a pair of. spaced apertures 7 When the blade is positioned within the comb, and the latter is drawn thru the hair in theusual manner, the edges of the latter come in Contact with the outer layers of the hair 1n the spaces between the teeth, while the inner en of the blade bears against a stop 1n the form of a pin 8, which is'slidable 1n parallel slots 9 cut in the opposite sides of the comb, and is prevented from becom- 1ng disengaged from `said slot by a head 10 upon one en and an undercut head 11 upon the outer end.
A fixed stud 12 is also secured to that side eoA of the comb from which protrudes the underl cut head 11 of the pin 8, and is also provided with an undercut head 13, the recesses in said heads facing in the opposite directions.' VVh'en the blade is within the recess 4, it may be shifted outwardly by :manually engaging and moving the in 8 laterally. After the said pin has reaciied its limit of movement, the oppositeend of the Ablade extends suiiciently beyond the end of the comb to be grasped and withdrawn completely therefrom.
Then, in order to secure said blade upon the outside of the comb, they are associated in such manner that the'heads 11 and 13 extend thru the corresponding apertures 7 in the blade, after which the pin is shifted in the revers@ direction, S0 that those portions 9i the blade ad'acent to and upon the opposite Fi 8, the construction of the right-hand en portion is as hereinbefore described, but the teeth 14 upon the lower side of the opposite,or left-hand, end are made lon er, and from a solid piece of material set into the collapsed tube, so that this portion* of the comb can be used satisfactorily in arranging the longer and thicker hair of women and girls, as compared with the hair of the length usually worn by men.
Having thus described my inventionwhat I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the'United States is 1. A toilet article, comprising a hollow tubular comb, a razor blade positioned within said comb with its cutting edges exposed between the teeth of the comb, and a pin extending transversely thru said comb and movable ongitudinally of the comb, to eject said blade.
2. A toilet article, comprising a hollow tubular comb, a razor blade having a air of apertures and positioned within sai comb vwith its cutting edges exposed between the teeth of the comb, to trim hair passing-thru the comb, a stud having an undercut head and fixed to the outer side of the comb, and a pin extending transversely thru said comb and having an undercut head projecting latterally be ond the said outer si e of the comb, said pin eing manually movable longitudi nally of the comb to e'ect the blade, and also movable to secure the lade upon the exterior surface of the comb, after the heads of said stud and saidy in have been inserted thru the apertures olf) the blade, to ermit direct shavinglwith the blade, while t e'comb teeth operate as guards for the blade.
3. A toilet `article, comprising a-comb, one end portion of which is of hollow tubular construction, a razor blade positioned within said hollow portion with its cutting edges exposed between the teeth of the comb, to trim hair passing thru the comb, the comb teeth upon one side being ofuniform depth, the teeth upon the other side being of different depths to accommodate hair of differing thickness, a stud having an undercut hea and fixed to the outer side of the comb, and a pin extending transversely thru said comb and having an undercut head rejecting laterally beyond the said outer si e ci the comb, said pin being manually movable longitudinally of the comb to e'ect the blade, and also movable to secure the lade upon the exterior surface of the comb after the heads of said stud and said pin have been inserted thru the apertures of the. blade, to permit direct shaving with the blade, while the comb teeth operate as guards for the blade.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
MAURICE ALLAND.
