IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-DOGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,166, dated October 26, 1875; application filed July 10, 1875.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, DRATON S. HALE, of Estillville, in the county of Scott and State of Virginia, have invented a new .and useful Improvement in Fire-Dogs, of which the following is aspecification:
Figure 1 is a side view of one of my improved fire-dogs, shown as applied to a fireplace. Fig. 2 is a front View, showing a pair of dogs arranged in place in a fire-place.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts.
The object of this invention is to furnish improved fire-dogs, which shall be so constructed as to keep the fire held up against the back stick, and which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and not liable to get out of place.
The invention consists in the fire-dogs made with a wide open hook at their upper ends, with their lower parts bent down ward at right angles, and either with or Without an offset; and in the combination of the racks with the dogs, as hereinafter fully described.
A are the dogs, upon the upper ends of which are formed hooks a, to hook upon staples, hooks. or spikes B, driven into the walls of the fire-place. The hooks c are made wide, so that the dogs cannot turn, and open, so that they can be conveniently hooked upon and detached from the staples B. The lower parts of the dogs A are bent downward at right angles, as shown in Fig. 1, so that they may hold the fire up against the back stick.
The dogs A may be bent twice at right angles, or may have an offset, a formed in them to bring their lower parts out from the jams but this is not essential, as they will be very effective when made Without said olfset a 0 are two racks, which are attached 'to the jams, and the teeth of which are designed to receive the dogs A and hold them in place. The racks O are secured to the jams by having spikes formed upon' or attached to their ends, to be driven into the said jams, or in any other convenient way.
The racks C will not be used when the dogs A are made without the offset a and when the dogs are made with the offset a the said racks may be used or not, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The fire-dogs A A, having books a and bent inward at their lower ends, and the staples 13, secured to the opposite walls of the tire place, all combined as shown and described, tor the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the racks C with the dogs A a a substantially as herein shown and described.
DRATON S. HALE.
