To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN L. Cox, a citizen of the United States, residingat Madison, in the county of Monroe and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in LoadBinders, of wlneh the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in load binders, and it pertains particularly to that type comprising a pointed stake for insertion into the load and embodying rope holding tines and a handle for manually rotating said stake.
In connection with a device of this type the invention aims as a primary object to provide means for adjusting the tines at any selected distance upon the stake above the load.
In combination with adjustably movable tines, the invention also comprisesa head which is provided upon the stake to limit the degree of insertion of the same into the load. Independent means are provided for ad usting this head at any selected pos tion upon the stake, this last adjustment being wholly independent of the adjustment of the tines.
The detailed construction will appear in the course of the following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like numerals indicating like parts throughout the several views, wherein Figure 1 is a detailed perspective view illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the opposite side of the stake from that shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed perspective views of slightly modified embodiments of the invention, and Figs. 5 and 6 are detailed perspective views of a sleeve which carries the tines and of the adjustable head above referred to. In the practical embodiment of my invention I employ a stake 1 having a pointed lower end 2 for insertion into the load and a squared upper portion 3. In connect on with the stake 1 I employ a handle 4 having at its upper end an angular entensi'onb terminating in spaced ears 6, which are pivoted by pins 7 to the extreme upper end of the stake 1. The handle 4 at its lower end is bent at an angle and of hooked shape as at 9 for engagement with any selected binding rope to lock the stake against rotation as will be readily understood.
I provide on the squared portion 3 a surrounding sleeve 10 having a squared opening 11 therethrough which conforms to said portion 3. The sleeve 10 terminates at its lower end in enlarged integral head or flange 12, which engages the load. Above the sleeve 10 I provide a second sleeve 13, having a squared opening 14 therethrough, similar in use to the opening 11, and having at opposite sides olfset rope engaging tines 15. The sleeves 10 and 13 are each provided at opposite points in their walls with alined apertures 16. The squared portion 3 is likewise provided with a vertical line of horizontal openings 17 extending therethrough. Pins 18 ass transversely through the openings 16 in both of the sleeves 10 and 13, and through any selected opening 17, to set said respective sleeves at any may be moved. sleeve 10 I have shown a single pin 18 and in connection with the sleeve 13 two pins 18. The number of locking pins employed however is purely arbitrary. After the pins 18 are engaged in the manner set forth, they themselves are in turn prevented from accidental displacement by cotters 19, passing tln'ough the projecting ends thereof as is clearly shown in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 3 the tines 15 are cast or otherwise fixed upon the stake and the sleeve 10 dis posed therebelow is alone adjustable. In Fig. 4 this arrangement is reversed, the head 12 being cast integral or otherwise 'llXGd upon the stake, and the sleeve 13 being adjustable.
In use the binding ropes are engaged between the tines and the sleeves or the stake and their free ends are then tied. The stake is then rotated by means of the handle 4 to take up the slack of such ropes. It will be apparent that this action may be facilitated by the proper adjustment of the sleeves 13 with relation to the head 12 or vice versa. Both the sleeves 10 and 13 may be adjusted with relation to one another to the limit of their intimate or spaced relation as is desired. In like manner said sleeves may both be adjusted with relation to the stake and without any regard for thedistance thcrebetween unless specially desired.
I/Vhile the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts position to which they In connection with the without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
While it is preferred that the upper portion 3 be squared, I do not necessarily limit myself to this shape as it may be round, or of other flat sided shape. It will of course be understood that the openings in the sleeves 10 and 13 will be conformable to the shape of the upper portion.
Having fully described my invention I claim:
1. A load binder comprising a pointed stake provided with a head and with a rope engaging tine, one of said last named ele ments being adjustable with relation to the other.
2. A load binder comprising a pointed stake provided with a head and with a tine carrying sleeve, said sleeve being adjustably movable with relation to said head, and means for holding said sleeve at any selected position.
3. A load holding device comprising a pointed stake, a load engaging head adjustably mounted on said stake, tines adjustably I mounted on said stake, means for sustaining said head at any selected position on said stake, and independent means for sustaining said tines at any selected position on said stake.
4. A load holding device comprising a pointed stake having a squared upper portion, a head carrying sleeve having a squared openmg surrounding said upper portion, a tine carrying sleeve having a squared opening surrounding said upper portion, said squared portion being formed with a line of apertures therethrough, and pins projected through said sleeves and adapted for engagement in a selected one of said apertures.
