Description
S. STEVENS.
DETACHABLE LINKS.
Patented Feb.27, 1877.
WITNESSES Zifl @WMZ ATTORN EY PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON, D C
.UNITED STATES SAMUEL STEVENS, OF
PATENT QFFICE.
ALLEYTON, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT lN DETACHABLE LINKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,927, dated February 27, 1877; application filed October 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL STEVENS, of Alleyton, in the county of Newaygo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Detachable Link; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a detachable link, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side view of the link. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same.
My detachable link is formed in two pieces pivoted together. Onepiece consists of a round or oval bar, A, with a semicircular hook, B, at each end and a post, 0, in the center between them. On top of the post 0 is pivoted the piece I), which is of such form and size as to close the space between the ends of the two hooks B B. At one end of the piece D is formed a projecting curved flange, d,
'which flange, when the link is closed, fits in a recess, b, made in the side of oneof the hooks B.
Thus, when the link is closed in the chain, it cannot become accidentally detached, while,
when desired, the chain can be slacked and the link quickly detached.
The part 1) of my link is made round or oval, as shown, with the exception of the projecting flange or hook at, and said part D is pivoted directly on the end of the center-post 0, but when in use there is no strain upon the pivot, neither is there any strain on the part D, as the adjoining links of the chain have their bearings entirely upon the hooks B B at the ends of the bar A. This bar A, with its hooks, may be made of any desired size, to have the required strength, while the part D need not be so very strong.
I am fully aware that detachable links made in two parts, pivoted together, are not new; hence I do not claim such, broadly, as being my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the bar A, with centerpost G and semicircular hook B at each end, and the part D, pivoted on the center-post, and provided at one end with the projecting curved flange d, to fit in a recess, b, on one side of one of the hooks B, and straight at the other end, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the. foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL STEVENS.
