SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,695, dated January '7, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. NALLEY, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Morgan, in the county of Bosque and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Snap-Hook, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in snap-hooks.
The object of the present invention is to provide a snap-hook which will be adapted for use in connection with the various parts of'harness and which will dispense with a spring for holding the parts together and which cannot in use accidentally open.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafterfully described, illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a snap-hook constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the snap-hook being open. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the opposite side of the snap-hook, the parts being closed. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail perspective views of the parts separated.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a snap-hook designed to be employed in connection with various parts of a harness or the like and comprising a main section or member 2 and a pivoted sect-i011 or member 3. The main section or member 2 is provided with an integral loop 4, and it has a substantially elliptical opening 5, and is provided at one end of the opening with an entrance-slot 6, and the pivoted section or member 3 is provided with a corresponding opening 7 and has an entrance-slot 8 at the opposite side thereof, whereby when the two sections have their openings substantially registering, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, the entrance-slots will be closed by the continuous sides.
The pivot 9, which connects the two sections or members, is located at about the center of the side of the main section having the entrance-slot, and when the pivoted section is swung outward a notch 10, which receives a ring 11, is adapted to carry the ring through the entrance-slot of the main section or member. The notch 10 is located at the upper side of the entranceslot 8 of the pivoted section or member 3, and is partially closed by the continuous side of the main section when the snap-hook is closed and prevents the ring from accidentally entering it. If thering should bear against the pivoted member at the end of the opening adjacent to the entrance-slot of the main section or member, the pressure would fail to open the snap-hook, as the strain would be longi tudinal instead of transverse.
- The pivoted section or member is provided at its continuous side with a lug 11, which when the snap-hook is closed fits within and fills the entrance-slot of the main section or member, and this lug is adapted to support and strengthen the parts and relieves the pivot of strain. The main section or member is provided at the inner end of the loop 4: with a boss or enlargement 12, and the pivoted section or member is provided with a notch or recess to receive this enlargement or boss.
It will be seen that the snap-hook is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted to be readily applied to various parts of harness, and that it ob viates the necessity of employing a spring for holding the parts together.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this in- Vention.
What I claim is 1. A snap hook, comprising a main section having a ring receiving opening and having an entrance slot at one side at one end of the opening, a pivoted section provided with a similar opening and having an entrance slot at the other side and provided at the entrance slot with a ring receiving notch arranged, when the pivoted section is swung outward to carry a ring through the entrance .slot of the main section, substantially as described.
