Description

A. PERRY. Lap-Links.
No. 204,367. Patented May 28,1878.
FIE 5 0 C- I WITNESSES I NTDR 1 1 W- "PETERS, PHnYn-UYROGRAPIER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
ALGIE PERRY, OF OOVINGTON, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAP-LINKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,367, dated May 28, 1878 application filed April 17, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALGIE PERRY, of Govington, in the county of Tipton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lap-Links; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referenee being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifiea' tion, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved lap-link. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the link partially open. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on line as w of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section on line 9 y of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section, similar to Fig. 3, with the rivet separate.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by similar letters of reference.
My invention has for its object to provide a cheap and convenient means whereby a broken chain may be easily and readily joined together, a whiffletree connected to a clevis of a plow, a tug-chain lengthened or shortened, &e.; and it consists of a two-part link having openings on the same side and joined together, and freely turning on a pivot inserted in the sides opposite to the openings, substantially as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the link proper, made of iron or other suitable material, and consisting of two parts, B B. These parts are of equal size, and have their inner faces made flat and smooth and their outer faces oval or half-round. These parts fit closely together, and are each provided with an opening, I) b, in the same or contiguous sides oi the said links, and nearly joining each other, of sufficient size to admit of the insertion of an additional link.
The parts B B are joined together by a rivet, G, inserted in openings 0 in the sides of the parts opposite to those having the openin gs b b. The parts B B are each made larger at or near the openings through which the pivot passes, to insure a uniform degree of strength.
It will be seen that, as the link B is turned to the right on the pivot O, the opening hwill become directly above the opening I), when the additional link or elevis can be inserted, and by returning the link B to its place the additional link will be securely caught in the link A.
Heretofore links have been made with their openings on opposite sides, requiring the turning of the parts about half around their pivot or axis in order to insert an additional link.
It will be seen that, owing to its simplicity, my link is better adapted to the trade than those now in use.
The parts of the link may be secured together either by a rivet, as shown in Fig. 5, or by a leg upon one of the parts, as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A link, A, composed of two parts, B B, pivoted together at the side opposite to the openings in the links, the leg 11 of the part B being longer than the leg 12 of the part B, and the leg 11 of the part B being longer than the leg b of the part B, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALGIE PERRY.
