ATTACHMENT FOR COMBING MACHINES.
Application filed June 10, 1927. Serial No. 197.907
My present invention relates tocombing machines, and is particularly directed to a' selvage guide for the detaching rolls of such machines, and has for its object the provision of a rigidly secured guide for each side of the machine that flexibly engages the roll a little above the center thereof to guide the cotton the notches having its outer edges rounded to form a guide, the vertical arm of the plate receiving therein binding means for a verti callyadjustable angularly disposed wiper holder removably supported on the said vertical arm of the sup-port that contacts with the detaching roll of the machine.
The drawings illustrate a satisfactory embodiment of the improvement and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view illustrating my inven tion in applied position.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the 1mprovement.
Figure 3 is a front elevation thereof.
Figure 4 is a planview of the blank from which the holder for the leather wiper strip is formed.
In Figure 1 of the drawings, the improvement is disclosed in applied position upon the type of combing machines known to the trade as the W hitin and Nasmith machine. As the constructions of these machines are well known in the art, a detail description thereof and the working of the parts constituting the same is not believed necessary. In the drawings the comber cylinder is indicated the numeral 1, the bottomnipper plate by the numeral 2 and the bottom detaching roll by the numeral As my improvement is designed for contacting engagement with the detaching roll 3 to serve as a guide for the cotton selvage therefrom, and as the construction and operation of this type of machines, as above stated, is well known in the art, reference to the remainder of the machine is not believed necessary. 1
It will, of course, be understood that one of these devices is placed at each side of the machine with the wiper parts ofthe two devices engaging the end parts of the detaching roll 3 but asthe devices are of the same construction but one of them will be described. Each device comprises a frame or support composed of a rectangular metal. plate whose horizontal portion is indicated in'the draw ings by the numeral 4and whose verticalportion by the numeral 5. The horizontal'porlongitudinal slot'6 and through thisslotthere is passed a bolt member 7 engaged'by a nut 3 which holds the device on the comber. The vertical arm 5 of the support is notched, as at 7, and upward of the notch the outer edge of the arm is rounded, as at 9, to provide seltion 4 from the end thereof is formed with a vage guides. The notch enables the edge to ibe bentinto rounded shape. The angle-or vertical arm of the support, inward of the notch 7 is provided with spaced aligning somewhat elongated openings 10, and passing through these openings there are the shanks of short headed. bolts 11 screwed through openings 12 in the depending plate or skirt13 of a holder member 14. As disclosed by Figure 4 of the drawings, the holder member 14 may be constructed from a substantially T-shaped strip or member, and the upper portion thereof is bent over the body in a line with its lower edge, and the projecting portions are then bent upon themselvesand extended inwardly over the rightangular part 15 of the holder thus provided. This right angular portion 15, with its bendable lower portions or arms 16 afford a pocket for a leather strip'17, and this strip contacts with the roll 3 at a point above the axial center thereof. The holder 14 is constructed of some suitable strong metal, as'is the frame or support thatconstitutes the right angular arms 4 and 51' The leather wiper member 17 is at all times in contact with the periphery of the roll to effectively wipethe rolland to direct selvage therefrom over the port.
The simplicity of the improvement and the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfect-ly'apparent to those skilled in the artto which such invention relates, itbeing obvious that the support is adj ustably sustained upon the comber and that the holder 14 is likewise adj ustably sustained upon the support. When in operation the device affords a rigid structure and will effectively prevent'the selvage guide flange 9 of the supwinding around the roll and stop the operation of the cornber.
Having described the invention, 1 claim 1. In a comber and in combination with the detaching rolls thereof, a support comprising a rightangular member having its horizontal arm adjustably but rigidly secured. on the frame of the comber, a holder removably and vertically adjustably secured on the vertical part of the support, and a leather strip designed to be received in and supported by the holder and engaging one of the said rolls.
2. In a coniber machine and in combination with the detaching rolls thereof, a support ing member oi rightangular shape whose horizontal part is of agreater length than its vertical part and which horizontal part is provided with an elongated slot for the reception of securing means, the vertical part having its outer edge notched and the corner thereof above the notch rounded to provide a guide said vertical part having spaced elon gated openings therethrough, bolts having threaded shanks passing through the openings, a holder comprising a pocket having a rightangular shirt on the inner edge thereof and through which the bolts are screwed and said holder designed for the. reception of a leather wiper member which engages one of the rolls.
3. In a comber machine, and in combination with its detaching rolls, a support connected with a part 01 the machine and extending between two pairs of said rolls, said support having a guidingpart thereon, a holder vertically adjustable on the support below the guiding part thereof and having a horizontal part and a wiper member of flexible material carried by said horizontal part and engaging one of the rolls.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
