UNITED STATES CHARLES T. RASCHIGK, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
CHECK-NOTGHING DEVICE.
Application filed February 5, 1923. Serial No. 617,004.
My invention relates to check notching devices and has for its object to provide a notching device which is adapted to notch a check at a fixed distance from the edge of the check.
Another object of the invention is to pro-' vide a stop member which is secured to the cutting blade of the device for limiting the movement of the check into the notching device.
A still further object is to construct the stop member out of wire and to attach the same to the underside of the cutting blade so that the appearance or the strength of the blade is not impaired.
A still further-object is to form the stop with a curved lower edge which is adapted to slide between the leaves-of the checkheld in the device whenthe cutting member is forced inwardly to notch a check.
The full objects and c dvantages of my invention will be found in The detailed description thereof and are particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a check holder and cutter showing my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the device shown in Figure 1 with a portion of the same indicated in section.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the cutting blade depressed.
My invention is shown as applied to a holder indicated in its entirety at A, which is formed of a single piece of metal having a back 10 and two side members 11 and 12 issuing outwardly therefrom. Between the sides 11 and 12 is positioned a pad of checks 13 which is held in position by means of two tongues 14 which may be stamped out of the metal of sides 10 and 11 and bent inwardly, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The tongues are adapted to engage in between the leaves of the check pad 13 as the pad is forced endwise into the holder until the staple 15, holding the leaves together, prevents further movement of the check pad in the holder.
The cutting member of the device is formed by striking out of the metal from the slide 11, as indicated at 16, therefrom an elongated cutting blade 17 which. is formed with a V-shaped end 18, leaving at the same time an opening 19 in the side 11 which terminates in a V- shaped slot 20 in the extreme end of the side member 11. The extreme end of the side member 11 which is indicated at21 is severed. from the back 10 along the line 22 and the same bent upwardly from the back 10 along the line 23 to form an inclined plate in which the notched portion 20 of opening 19 is situated. WVith this arrangement, the cutting blade 17 is adapted to progressively engage, by means of its V-shaped end 18,'the notch-20 and plate 21 so as to progressively notch 21. check positioned between said plate and'cutting blade.
My invention consists of a device for limiting the movement of a check positioned between the plate 21 and the cutting blade '17.
This consists of a wire member "B which is provided with a portion 24 extending outwardly from the end of the cutting blade 17 near the V-shaped cutting point 18 thereof.
Formed on the portion 24 of wire member B is an offset portion 25 which forms a seat against the underside of the cutting blade 17 The extreme end 26 of wire member B which is connected to the offset portion 25 passes directly through the cutting blade 17 and is riveted in place, as is clearly shown in Figure 2. For securing the other end of member B to the cutting blade 17, I provide the member B with a rearwardly extending brace 126, which is formed with a loop or eye 27. A rivet 28 passes through the cutting blade 17 and through the loop 27 thereby holding the said device firmly in. place. It can readily be seen with this construct-ion that the eye 27 holds the wire stop B rigidly in place, while the offset portion 25 prevents the riveted end 26 from being pushed through the hole in the cutting member 17.
In using the device, a check, such as shown at 29 in Figure 2, may be inserted between the plate 21 and the cutting end 18 of the cutting blade 17 The portion 24 of stop B, which normally extends through the notched portion 20 of opening 19 serves to limit the movement of the check. As the cutting blade 17 is depressed, the check is notched in the usual manner which is indicated in Figure 3, the wire member B being forced downwardly in between the edges of the checks, as clearly shown in this figure. This is easily accomplished, inasmuch as the stop B is made of wire which has a rounded lower surface and easily separates the checks and slides between the same.
The advantages of my invention are of real importance, as it produces a stop for limiting the cut in the check, which does not weaken the cutting blade or the metal forming the cutting notch of the device such as is the case when stops are punched out of the material forming these portions of the cutter. The device is nest in construction and can be made at a trivial cost and is readily attached to the cutter.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a check holder and cutter, a body adapted to hold a pad of checks, a cutter having a cutting tongue positioned edgewisc of said checks and a stop formed on said cutting tongue positioned perpendicularly thereto and extending lon gitudinally thereof and adapted to pass between the checks of said pad when the cutting tongue is depressed.
2. In combination with a check holder and cutter including a holding member for holding a pad of checks, a notching device positioned adjacent the edges of the checks and stop means on said notching device positioned perpendicularly thereto and extending longitudinally thereof and adapted to pass in between the leaves of the checks when said notching device is caused to notch a check.
3. In combination with a check holder and cutter adapted to hold a pad of checks, a cutter having a cutting tongue positioned edgewise of said checks, a stop termed on said tongue extending towards the edges of said checks and means on said stop for separating the checks to permit said tongue to be depressed.
4. A notching device comprising a tongue, a V-shaped Wire member forming astop, said wire member having a looped end a rivet passing through said looped end and securing said stop to said tongue and an offset portion on the other end of said tongue for providing a seat for said stop, the extreme end of said offset portion being riveted to said tongue.
