citizen of the United States, and a resident of Riverdaleon-Hudson, in the county oi .5f New Yorli'and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Fasteners, ot which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to metallic fasteners having for their object the binding together of sheets ol'paper, and other like material, and for light binding oi various kinds.

The depth of the concave curvature of that part of the sunken anvil-face which covers the edge of the slot 4 nearest the fold 2 of the members, should be sufficient to enable the free end of the tang 3, to pass some distance through and beyond the slot 4, before engaging with the anvilface to secure the proper deflection of the tang down and forward over such lip, and over the anvil-covered surface of such member; the object of the lip being to prevent any play between the deflected or bent over part of the tang and such covered surface, by providing a fulcrum or prop over which it is ent, but the lip may be omitted without materially lessening the efficiency of such clenching. The tubular riveting pillar 6, of such member, and the coacting receiving eye, 8, in the member C, may also be omitted without materiallyim airing the operation of such clenching, the fol 2, of the metal connecting such members being substantially suflicient to hold them together in the rigid parallel contact required.
In the drawing Figs. 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, respectively, correspond in kind and construction with the Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, excepting that in the former figures are omitted the lip 5, the tubular pillar 6, and the receiving eye 8, shown in the latter figures.

'correspond in kind and construction with Figs. 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, excepting that in the former figures the intermediate member, B, instead of the end member, C, as in the latter figures, is providedwith the clenching anvil, 7'; and the end member, C', in the former figures instead of the intermediate member, B, as in the latterl figures, is provided with the tang receiving slot, 4 5 and the end member, C, of the former figures is folded inward under the intermediate member, B', instead of upward and over the intermediate member, as in the former and other corresponding figures of the drawing.
To secure accuracy in the coaction of the interlocking parts of the clamping members, the fold connecting them may preferably be but little less in width than the width of the y respective members; and to facilitate the y scribed, made from Aa blank of sheet metal divided by folds into three coacting members, one of which is provided with a tang, another with a slot and a third with an anvil; the slot free end of the tang of the other member, and the anvil of the third member having throughout its length a decreasing depth and curvature of its face to deflect and clench the free end of the tang over upon the outer sur'- face of the member possessing the slot," and to thereby rivet that member with the member possessing the tang, with the material being fastened strung on the tang, and clamped and locked between said riveted members on the fastener being put to the use intended.
2. A metallic fastener presenting two facing clamping members and one anvil or clenching member, one of the members'being provided with a penetrating tang adapted to penetrate the material being held between the clamping members, another member pro vided with a slot to receive the free end of such tang on its exit from such material, and a third member having one of its surfaces recessed in manner to provide it with a sunken anvil surface, the face of such anvil" member being seated in permanent bearing withk the back of the slotted member, and the slot of the latter being permanently covered by the sunken anvil face of the former, with such anvil face possessing a graded curvature adapting it, when borne against by the tang on the bringing together of the free ends of the clamping members, to deflect the free end of such tang in the direction of the fold of the clampi members and to clench it over upon the anvi covered surface of the slotted member and thereby rivet those members together, with the papers clamped between them strung on the tang.
3. A metallic fastener presenting two facing clamping members and one anvil or clenching member, one of the members being provided with a penetrating tang adapted to penetrate the material being held between the clamping members, another member rovided with a slot to receive the free en of such tang on its exit from such material and integrally connected, one of the members bel-A4 ing provlded with a penetrating tang, a second member provided with a slot for the reception of such tang, and a third member having a recessed and ridged anvil-face sunk in one of its surfaces and forming a rentrant cavity therein, one end of such cavity having a depth greater than that of its other end withthe space intermediate such ends sunken and graded to corres ond with the de th of 65 in one member being adapted to receive the i such ends, said anvi member being olded 130 over and seated in permanent parallel contact with the slotted member and with the deeper end of its anvil face, or cavity, bridging the slot of'such member and adapted to receive therein and to defiect and force therefrom the pointed end of the tang and t-o seat it over upon the covered surface of said slotted member and to house it thereon.
5. In a metallic fastener of the character described, a member provided vwith a depression or rentrant cavity the inner surface of which constitutes a curved anvil face sunk therein deeper at one end than at its other end, and adapted to cover a tang-receiving slot man adjoining member and to engage with the point of a tang projected through such slot, and by the shape of its face to deflect and bend the point of said tang over the surface of such adjoining member bordering such slot, and to clench and house it therein.
6. Ametallic fastener of the character described providing a lurality of coacting members one of whicii is provided with a slot having one of its edges projected outwardljyT from the plane of such member and providing a lip adapted to serve as a fulcrum over which a tang of another member is folded in locking together both such members in applying theV device to the uses intended.
