EMMA M. BARTON, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
PACKAGE-BINDER.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 23, 1920.
Application filed October 20, 1919. Serial No. 332,002.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA M. BARTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Package-Binders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure l. A prospective view of a package binder constructed in accordance with my invention and shown applied to a package.
Fig. 2. A plan view with the disk removed showing the manner of connecting` the cord to the binder.
Fig. 3. A transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
This invention relates to an improvement in package binders such, for instance, as are used inbinding and securely fastening packages of letters, papers or other.` articles, being particularly adapted for binding packages of letters in the postal service, or for packages of papers in offices, the object of the invention being production of a device which is readily applied and which will firmly bind various articles together andi which may be readily detached. :IIhe invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly cited in the claim. In carrying out my invention, I employ a base or body 4, struck up from sheet metal, substantially oval in form andfprovided with two prongs. 5 and 6 forming a slot 7 between them. At the side opposite the prongs, is a hole 8 through which one end of a cord 9 may be passed and secured by knotting the cord on the under side. Superimposed upon the base 4 is a disk 10 secured to the base by a rivet 11 which passes through holes formed in the disk and base ends of the package and between the disk and base from left to right, thence around the sides of the package and again between the disk and base from left to right, thence down through the slot 7 under the prong 54 and thence again between the disk and base from left to right, the cord crossing itself so as to form a firm bite which prevents the cord from slipping. The device is readily released by reversing the operation. This device is readily formed by stampin up the two members which are connectedy a single rivet. The device is readily applied to a package and when applied will firmly hold the several parts of the package in place and may be readily detached.
I claim:
A package binder comprising a substantially oval-shaped base; provided with a perforation in one end and at its opposite end with two outwardly-projectinpf diver gent prongs forming` a tapered slot-between them, a disk depressed in its center and riveted to said base whereby the edge of the disk stands in a. plane above the plane of the base, and a cord connected with the base through said perforations and adapted to be passed around the depressed portion of the disk between the base and disk and then between the prongs and again between the disk and base, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
'EMMA M. BARTON.
