WIT NE ES a ENVENTOR N.FETER5, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON B. Q
UNrrEn STATES ABRAHAM KAUFFMAN, OF ANNVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PATENT Qrrronc IMPROVEMENT IN lNVALlD-BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,503, dated October 5, 1875; application filed July 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABRAHAM KAUFFMAN, of Annville, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Invalid -Bedsteads and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings are representations of side elevations of my bedstead, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view thereof.
This invention has relation to invalid-bedsteads and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the inner adjustable head and foot frames, with their windingshafts, pawls and ratchets, the cords and pulleys, and the suspended reclining frame, adapted for attachment to ordinary bedsteads of varying lengths, where the foot-board is made low in the common fashion, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the frame of an ordinary bedstead,B the head-board and O the foot thereof. D D represent the four posts or standards forming end frames D D These are designed to stand within the bed frame, as shown, being secured thereto by suitable clips E. At or near their lower ends the supports D are connected by tie-braces F. G G indicate the winding-shafts, journaled in suitable bearings a, attached to the posts D and pro- Vided with the pulleys H and ratchets K. L indicates the pawls, which engage with the ratchets. These are pivoted to the ends of arms M, which are secured to the posts D and extend along the inside of the side rail of the bedstead for a certain distance, and then under the same transversely, and upward on the outside of said rail to the pivots of the pawls, which extend in the reverse direction to the ratchets. At the ends of the winding shafts key-seats b are made for the attachment of the operating cranks N. S represents the stretcher, consisting of a rectangular frame, S, to which is secured the web upon which the patient rests. Cords c are passed through perforations in the frame, and extend upward over pulleys d seated in bearings in the tops of posts D, and thence downward to the pulleys H of the winding-shafts, to which they are secured.
At the foot of the stretcher-frame the side rails m are perforated, as indicated at z, for the attachment of the cord at different points. This end of the stretcher is thus enabled to be extended beyond the foot of a short bedstead, the head and foot frames D D being moved toward each other sufficiently to fit within the frame of such bedstead, as above set forth.
The stretcher is laid with the webbing upon the bed or mattrass, and the frame well over the edge. The patient, being placed upon the Webbing, is raised, when necessary, clear of the mattress, by winding the cords 0 upon the pulleys H, the keepers or pawls L and ratchets K serving to hold the stretcher, when raised, at any height required.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An invalid-bedstead attachment, consisting of the head-frame D the adjustable footframe D and the suspensible stretcher-frame S, having adj ustin g-perforations Z for the suspendingcords c, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the stretcher S and its suspending-cords c, of the head and foot supports D D having the windingshafts G, pulleys H and d, pawl-arms M, pawls L, and the braces F, connecting the feet of said supports, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above Ihave hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ABRAHAM KAUFFMAN.
