SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,039, dated May 14, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANTON WALDEMAR DARRE, manufacturer, of Copenhagen, Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head and Shoulder Rests for Bedsteads and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to adjustable head and shoulder rests for bedsteads and the like, and it consists in structural features, and combinations of cooperative elements, as will now be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation partly broken away, Fig. 2 a top plan view, and Fig. 3 an end elevation, of a bedstead having my improved head and shoulder rest applied thereto.

In the above figures of drawings I have illustrated the application of my invention to a metal bedstead B, of well known construction, in the form of an attachment, the const-ituent elements being detachably connected with said bedstead so as to be readily attached and detached, though, if desired, the said constituent elements may be permanently secured to the bedstead.

A fiat bar, 2, of wood or metal and of a length equal to the width of the bedstead B has at each end an upright, 3, in which is secured a pivot bolt 4, said flat bar resting on the bed slats and being held in place by the mattress and the weight of the occupant of the bed, or the bar 2 may be tied,or otherwise secured to the side rails 12 of the bedstead. A yoke, 01' substantially U-shaped frame F has connected thereto a canvas or a bolster f, which constitutes the head and shoulder rest and is adapted to receive an additional pillow or pillows for the head. The canvas or bolster f is preferably laced to the frame F so that the position of the former may be readily adjusted relatively to the frame and to the upper portion of the body of the occupant of the bed. The legs of the yoke or frame F are provided with longitudinal slots formed in their outer ends and straddle thepivot bolts 4, whereby said frame is readilyapplied to and removed from its pivotalconnections. To each of the legs f of the frame is secured one end of a cord 5, in any suitable manner, as by provid ing the cord with hooks 5 adapted to hook onto studs or into holes on or in frame F, and

it is obvious that by pulling upon both cords, the frame or yoke F can be readily raised from a horizontal or approximately horizontal position to a vertical position, thereby raising the upper portion of the body of the occupant of the bed from a horizontal to a more or less reclining position without effort on the part of said occupant and without materially 6o disturbing the bed covering. This is of great advantage, not only to an invalid occupant of the bed, but also to the attendant or nurse, in that the body of the former is not exposed to sudden changes of temperature, while but 6 little effort is required on the part of the attendant to effect the change of position of the patient.

In order that the adjustment ofthe frame or yoke F and the locking of the same in the desired position may be more readily accomplished, I employ the following devices: A rail 6 provided with hooks 7 adapted to be hooked to the foot board or upper cross bar 5, at the foot of the bed, has secured thereto rods 7 screw-threaded at the lower ends to receive each a nut 8 and a clamping plate or hook 9 adapted to take under the foot board or under the lower cross bar I) of the foot end of the bedstead B, whereby saidrail isse- 8o curely fastened to the bedstead. To the up per face of the rail 6 at each end is pivoted a pulley 12. A winding drum 13 is secured to a shaft that has its bearings in the rail 6 and in a bracket or housing 14 secured thereto, 8 said shaft carrying a suitable crank handle h and a ratchet wheel 15 held against rotation in one direction by a pawl 16 pivoted to the bracket or housing. One end of the cords 5 is secured to the winding drum, 13, said 0 cords passing around the pulleys 12, so that when the drum is revolved in the proper direction the cords are wound up, thereby raising the frame or yoke F, which will be held in its raised position by the pawl 16.

If it is desired to lower the frame F the pawl is disengaged from its ratchet, the attendant having hold of the crank it and allowing the said frame to slowly fall back to its normal position, after which the pawl is again 0o brought into engagement with its ratchet, leaving the parts ready for the lifting of the frame.

"Although I have described the adjustable head rest when constructed as an attachment for bedsteads, it is obvious that the pivotal connections between the frame F and the bedstead, as well as the winding devices may be fixtures of said bedstead by permanently securing the same thereto.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a pivoted shoulder rest, of the rail 6 provided with hooks 7, the connecting rods 7 secured to said rail, the hooks 9 adjustable on said rods, a winding mechanism supported from rail 6, and cords connecting such mechanism with the shoulder rest, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination with the bar or slat 2 having uprights 3 and pivot bolts 4, the longitudinally slotted bars f and the shoulder rest f laced thereto, of the rail 6 provided with hooks 7, the connecting rods 7 a secured to said rail, the hooks 9 adjustable on said rods, a winding mechanism supported from rail 6, and cords connecting such mechanism with 25 the aforesaid bars f substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
