IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-POCKETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,376, dated October 5, 1875 application filed July 10, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH OoL'roN, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Pockets, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a front view of my improved pocket, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a de- Vice for fastening the pocket in place. Fig. 3 is a detail section, taken through the line as 00, Fig. 1, and showing the fastening device attached to it. 'Fig. 4. is a detail longitudinal section of the fastening device, taken through the line y 3 Fig. 2.

The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claims.

A represents the pocket, which may be made of cloth, leather, or other suitable material. The pocket A is made double, and in the space between its parts is secured a series or net-work of small chains, B. Upon the outer side of the pocket A the chains may be crossed or netted, so as to pass in two directions, as shown in Fig. 1. Upon the inner side of the pocket it will be suflicient to have them cross the said pocket only in one direction. At the mouth of the pocket the edges of its front and rear parts arerounded oif, and are secured by rivets or stitching to the semicircular bars 0, that form the clasp, which bars are hinged to each other at their ends by a spring-hinge. The bars 0 are made upon the arcs of different circles, so that the forward bar may close into the outer bar, as shown in Fig. 1. The clasp O is fastened, when closed, by aspring-catch, D. To thelarger bar 0, just above the catch D, is pivoted a small disk, E, which has a small handle upon one side, and in its other side is formed a slot of such a size that, when turned directly opposite the catch D, the upper edge of the said catch may slip into the said slot, allowing the.

pocket to be opened. When the disk E is turned into any other position its edge rests against the upper edge of the catch D, and

securely locks it. In the outer bar of the clasp 0, upon each side of the catch D, are formed two short slots, 0, to receive the two lugs formed upon the side edges of the'middle part of the plate F. In the middle part of the plate F is formed a wide slot, and in its end parts, at the ends of said slot, are formed depressions or recesses, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4.

In using the fastening F for attaching the pocket to a garment, the pocket A is inserted in the pocket of the garment, and a portion of the garment is passed through the slot in the fastener F, and a pin is passed through it, so that its ends may rest in the recesses of said fastener. The lugs of the fastener F are then passed through the slots 0, and are closed down upon the bar of the clasp G. This enables the pocket to be readily attached to a garment even when in wear.

G are rubber blocks, secured to the outer bar of the clasp G, upon the opposite sides of i the spring-catch D, with their lower ends projecting, as shown in Fig. l.

The rubber blocks G are designed toserve as guards to prevent a watch-case from being struck and scratched by the lower end of the catch D when being put into and taken out of the pocket.

H aving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The pivoted and slotted disk E, in combination with the spring {catch D and the clasp O, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The lugged, slotted, and recessed plate F, in combination with the slots 0, formed in the outer bar of the clasp O, substantially as herein shown and described.

3. The combination of the rubber blocks G with the outer bar of the clasp O and the spring-catch D, substantially as herein shown and described.
