IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-LININGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 68,373, dated October 5,1875; application filed J une 24, 1875.

To all whom itonay concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. CHIPMAN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Carpet-Lining, of which the following is aspecification:
This invention relates to carpet-linin gs; and consists in a carpet-lining composed of two sheets of paper and an inclosed fibrous sheet, the two sheets of paper being united by means of afolded or bent strip of paper pasted at its edges on one side only, and With the edges of the strip connected with the two sheets back from the edges of the sheets, forming an openedge lining, substantially as set forth.
The drawing represents in cross-section this my improved lining.
The outer sheets a b, of paper, have between them a fibrous sheet, 0, as usual, and the edges of the sheets a b are connected by means of strips of paper, (1, folded at about a central point, and in the direction of their length. These strips 01 have paste applied directly to their edges on one side only, for it will be noticed but one side of each strip touches the sheets of paper a b. At the left side of Figure l the connecting-strip dis folded inwardly, and the paste is consequently applied to its outer side, near its edges} and the edges of the strips are placed quite near the edges of the sheets a b, stiffening the edges. At the right-hand side the strip is folded in the opposite direction and pasted on its outside only, and the pasted edges are allowed to meet the sheets a b back from the edges far enough to make the desired opening for the lapping of the edge of the adjacent breadth of carpet lining. Instead of strip d being folded with a defined crease it may be simply curved, so that when rolled up or laid out and used the strip will assume the condition of the strip, as shown at the left of the figure.
Instead of applying the strips as shown in the drawing, I maymake both edges like either of the edges shown.
I claim- In a carpet-lining, the combination of the sheets of paper a b and the interior fibrous sheet cl, with the folded edge-connecting strip pasted at its edges on the same side, and connecting the interior faces of the sheets a b, substantially as set forth. a
