IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.i
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168.279, dated September 28, 1 875; application led .Tune 1, 1875. i
.To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, J. OOTHOUDT, Z. M. P. HEABERLIN, and E. M. SWEET, of Minneapd lis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a spring bed bottom, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in Which- Figure lis a side elevation of our spring bed-bottom, and. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of the same. y
A A represent two parallel bars running longitudinally with the bedstead, and connected by means of two cross-bars, B B, bolted thereto, and situated at such points as to be beneath the shoulders and kneesl of the person lying on the bed-bottom. 4 On top of each bar A, at or near the center, is secured a wooden stay, C, one end of which is bolted to the head-rail D, and the other end inserted in a staple, a, on the under side of the footrail D. E E are the slats, resting upon the upper convex surfaces ofthe rails D D. These slats are secured to the head-rail D by means of sta-ples b b passing through them, while they are simply held to the foot-rail Dl by passing through staples d d, fastened in said rail D are supported upon similar springs G.
By this arrangement of the part of our bedbottom it gives ease and comfort to the sleeper, and two persons of different weight may` lie thereon without the bottom tipping to either side.
The bed-bottom is simple in construction and cheap to manufacture, and yet durable, and not liable to get out of order.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a bed-bottom, with the slats E E, head-rail D, and foot-rail D', of the stays C G, secured to the head-rail, and sliding under the foot-rail, and the springs G Gr and G', arranged substantially as herein Set forth.
2. In a bed-bottom, 'the slats E E, fastened to the head-rail and sliding on the footrail, except the outer slaton each side, which is fastened to the foot-rail, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOSIAH OOTHOUDT. Z. M. P. HEABERLIN. ELI M. SWEET.
