UNITED STATES PATENT orrics.
ARTHUR SMITH, or CHICAGO, ILL oIs, AssIeNonn r DIRECT AND MEsNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO THE BARRETTB NDERY COMPANY, or CHICAGO, ILLINo s, A CORPORA-' 'rIoN or ILLINOIS.
COMBINATION root.
Application filed october 16, 1925. Serial No. 62,843.
This invention relates to improvements in combination tools, and has for its primary object to provide a tool of this character embodying means for accomplishing various household tasks.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a compact tool of this class having means for effectually and quickly sharpening knives. 7
Another object of the invention is the provision of a combination tool having means for conveniently removing milk-bottle caps, extracting nails, and the like.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a tool of the above character of simple and durable construction designed so as to be sold at a reasonable price.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent as the descrip: tion progresses.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the same:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a tool con. structed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1 lookand Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4-4t of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 generally indicates the body of my improved tool, comprising an intermediate portion 11 of generally rectangular formation. The
forward extremity of the portion 11 terminates in a tapered projection 12, the end thereof being beveled to provide a suitable screw-engaging bit. The opposite extremity of the intermediate portion 11 connects with an enlarged circular projection 13, provided at its center with a comparatively large opening 1 1 provided at one edge with an outwardly directed tongue 15.
As is readily seen from Fig. 1 of the drawing, the intermediate portion 11 is provided with a transversely directed slot 16 ing in the direction indicated by the arrows,
extending from one of the longitudinal edges [and having. the ;corner portions rounded. The body of the tool is preferably of thin metal, the portions adjacent the slot 16 being slightly raised to form circular pockets 17, the purpose of which will become apparent as the description progresscs.
The body is further provided adjacent one end of the intermediate portion 11 with a rectangular-shapedslot 18 extending a short distance into the body so as to provide suitable means for engaging tacks and the like for the removal of the same. The intermediate portion of the tapered projection 12 is struck 'out to provide a triangularshaped pointed prong 19 offset "from the body of the tool and preferably inclined at an angular position so as to be readily 'engageable with the caps of milk bottles and similar containers.
Rotatably mounted in the circular offset pockets 17 are a pair of complementary disks 20 preferably constructed of suitable steel. These wheels are rotatably supported by transversely extending pins 21, the ends 1 thereof being upset to prevent removal of the wheels and arranged so as to permit convenient rotation. These wheels are positioned in a common plane and with the adjacent sides of their peripheries substantially in'contact so that a knife or similar implement may be drawn therebetween for efficiently sharpening the edge thereof.
As disclosed in the drawing, the tool body is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending raised ridges '22 adapted to in crease the rigidity of the tool body and prevent distortion thereof. This construction provides a light yet durable tool designed to readily perform the functions of the individual elements, combined in a compact structure for the purpose of providing a convenient and efficient tool.
It is evident from the foregoing that each of the combined elements is designed to efficiently perform its function, the tongue 15 being adapted for removal of crimped bottle caps while the tapered projection v12 may be readily employed as a screw-driver. It is therefore obvious that a combination tool of exceedingly simple design and compact structure has been provided, capable of use in performing various household tasks with facility and convenience.
It is to be understood that the invention herein shown and described is susceptiblev of modification, and that various changes as to the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resortedto without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scopeof'the appended claim.
Having thus described my invent-ion, I claim:
In a device of the class described, a sheetmetal body member having a slot/opening through one edge thereof, the said body member having ofi 'set portions defining pockets at the opposite sides of the slot,
blade-sharpening disks mounted for free rotation Within the said pockets and positioned in a common plane at opposite sides of the slot with the vrelatively adjacent sides of their peripheries substantially in contact, the pockets being of adepth substantially equal to the thickness of 'thefdisk's whereby the (interfaces of the disks will'be substantially flush with the face of the body member in which, the pocketsare formed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
