1,595,322 PATENT OFFICE.
I 'ARNOLD J. TANNER, OF NORTH HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
TOOL FOR SHAEPENI G KNIVES Ann THE LIKE.
Application filed February 24, 1925. Serial No. 11,130.
The present invention relates to tools of a certain type, for example, knife sharpeners and can-openers, and certain objects of the invention, among others, are to improve the construction of tools of this kind so as to increase the 'efliciency thereof; to improve the appearance, and to facilitate production wherein a tool of a high grade may be produced at a comparatively low cost.
The present invention is an improvement 7 in or modification of the tool which forms the subject matter of U. S. Patent No. 1,523,089, dated January 13, 1925. In the present instance, the tool is constructed with a body member first formed with open or outwardly converging members and one member carries bearings or supports for the operative member or members. The invention is applied to knife sharpeners of a type having a pair of fiat discs mounted in different planes so as to be held in a position wherein they will overlap only at their edges. With this arrangement, when a knife is drawn at right angles between the two discs, the cutting edges of the discs will bear on both sides of the edge of the knife and thus sharpening the edge. The body member of the tool is preferably composed of a malleable iron casting or forging which permits of the closing of bifurcated members of p the body, thereby keeping the discs in the proper operative position.
In such cases where the invention is applied to can openers the operative member is the blade of the tool, and to prevent rotation of the blade on the bearing, means are provided which interlock to hold the blade in a rigid position for operation. The body of the can opener is substantially the same as the body of the knife sharpener including the two lugs which are formed on one of the bifurcated members and in this case the lug located at the end of the body operates as a fulcrum for the tool.
The improved tool in its several modified forms will be more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1. is a perspective view showing the invention applied to a tool in which the head or body portion is composed of a casting;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same construction;
Figure 3 is a detail perspective View showing the form of the casting before it is assembled; and
Figure t'shows modified form of the casting.
Referring to 4 inclusive, the completev tool comprises the handle 1 and the bifurcated head or' body member '2 in i which discs 3 and 3 are mounted. These discs are of the usual form and may have straight or beveled edges as desired. 7
The tool illustrated is composed of a forging or preferably of a malleable iron casting. This casting 14 has as integral parts the bifurcated members 15 and 16, also the tang 17, and to facilitate the casting operation, the member 15 is spread open. In ,a'ssembling the tool, the member 15 is closed to form the slot 18 to receive the cutter disc 3. A bearing is provided for this disc by means of the rivet 19 which further serves to prevent the spreading of the members 15 and 16 resulting from hard use. The rivet 20 provides a. bearing for the disc 3 In Figure 4, the casting is substantially the same, with the exception that to eliminate the drilling and riveting operation, the lugs or posts 21 and 22 are cast integral on the member 16 and in assembling the tool, the disc 3 is mounted on the post 21 which is subsequently headed to retain the disc in lace. The other lug 22 projects from the elevated part 23 of the member 16 and which elevated or thickened portion serves as a stiffening means for the member 16 and keeps the discs in proper alignment without the necessity of using spacing washers. In this latter modification, the member 15 is pressed down on the lug 22, and the stiffness of the member 15 will prevent the displacement of the disc 3, or if desired, the lug 22 may be lengthened so as to extend through a hole in the member 15 and then the protruding end can be headed in the usual way.
The longer member 16 preferably carries the bearing for both discs, this arrangement being found desirable to facilitate the casting operation.
Various modifications, other than those herein described, may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and it is to be understood all modifications coming fairly within the terms of the appended claims shall be covered therein.
I claim:
1. In a. tool as described, a body member having an end and an intermediate bearing, rotating discs mounted on said bearings, said the drawings, Figures 1 to 1 end bearing being formed to provide selfretentive means for the disc or discs mounted thereon, said means acting conjunctively With the overlapping: disc or'discs mounted on the intermediate bearing and which latter disc or discs are held inanoperative position by a forked end of said body member.
2. In a tool as described, body having openforked members adapted to be closed, one member carrying intermediate and end bearings or supports on di ii'erent planes, at pair-of discs mountedon said bearings 0r supports, and the other member of said body When closed operating to retain said discs in an operative position.
3; A; tool having operative elements com prising; a body formed with open bifurcated members, one member carrying bearings or supports ondifierentplanes for a pair oi rotating discs and the other member When closed" constituting retentive means for one of said discs. I
Signed at: New Haven, county of" New Haven and" State offConnecticut; this 21st day of February, 1925:
AtR NOLD J; TANNER.
