BOTTLE CAP Filed Feb. 8, 1938 Hunt, C77:
ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 14, 1939` UNITED STATES PATENT lOFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to bottle caps and has for an object to provide a bottle cap of the Crown type having fixed thereto an upstanding rigid lever, the lever being substantially triangular in cross section and having the apex disposed at substantially the center of the cap and having the'side opposite the apex disposed adjacent to. the peripheral edge of the top of the cap so that the lever is disposed eccentrically on the cap and when the lever is pried toward the center of the cap the center of the cap will be depressed and at the same time the corrugated skirt of the cap will be lifted atthat portion adjacent to the base of the rigid lever to the end that the cap will be removed easily without mutilating the cap or danger of breaking the bottle.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the advantages of the invention. v
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification,
Figure ll is a perspective view of a bottle cap constructed in accordance with the invention, in applied position.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view ocf the cap shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan View of the cap.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, the reference numeral Ill designates a bottle cap of the conventional Crown type having a disc top Il and a corrugated depending skirt l2.
In carrying out the invention I equip the cap with an upstanding rigid lever I3 which in practice may be from one and one-half to two inches lcenter of the disc top of the cap While the side 10 opposite the apex, which side is slightly rounded, is disposed eccentrically of the cap and adjacent to the skirt but is spaced suiciently inward of the skirt to permit proper operation of the cap- .ping machine. 15
In practice when the cap is to be removed the rigid lever is grasped with one hand while the bottle may be held in the other hand. Then the lever is pried in a direction toward the center of the cap. By this operation the apex of the rigid lever forces down the center of the cap while the base of the lever simultaneously pulls upon the peripheral edge of the cap and effectively dislodges the cap from the bottle without puncturing or tearing the cap, such mutilation sometimes causing injury to the operators hands, and with minimum manual exertion.
From the above description it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be fully understood without further explanation.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a skirted bottle cap having a disc top, of an upstanding rigid lever of substantially triangular cross section xed at the base to the top and having the apex disposed at substantially the center of the top of the cap and having the side opposite the apex disposed adjacent the periphery of the top of the cap.
