BOTTLE' CAP REMOVER Filed Aprn 21, 1942 llllllllllllll! 11" Patented Oct. 5, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a bottle cap remover of that form more particularly adapted for removing the wellknown form of crown type cap and has for its principal object the provision of a device of the character described which may be used without danger of cracking the glass from which the bottle is made.
A further object of the invention consists in the provision of a bottle cap remover of the character described which includes a handle and a head portion, the head portion being formed to receive and encircle the bottle cap and to hold the removing projection or lifting lug of the remover in a position so that it will not contact the neck of the bottle and more particularly the beaded edge usually formed at the mouth portion of the bottle neck.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and arrangement of parts, described in the following specication and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of the invention. as they now appear to me it will be understood that .such changes may be made as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Fig. 5 is a fragmental longitudinal vertical section with the bottle cap remover positioned relative to the cap on the bottle mouth; and
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 showing the bottle cap remover in the act of removing the cap, the lifting lug or projection being engaged with the edge of the bottle cap flange.
In the drawing, a indicates the handle portion and b the head portion of my improved form of bottle cap remover. with the upwardly extending projection I adapted to be received in the circular opening 2, formed adjacent one end of the handle a, and the head portion is secured to the handle portion. by means of the rivets 3 or other suitable fastenings, as shown more particularly in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 of the drawing. Thehead portion is also provided with the depending circular llange 4 adapted to provide the recess 5 to receive the bottle cap, as shown more particularly in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing, this depending ilange 4 encircling The head portion is formed A the bottle cap and positioning the remover relative thereto. Extending downwardly from the flange 4 is a projection or arm 6 having the inwardly directed portion 1, the projection or arm 8 with the inwardly directed portion I forming what might be termed a lifting lug or projection for raising the bottle cap relative to the mouth of the bottle.
As shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawing the handleextends downwardly at a slight angle from the head portion and the longitudinal edges of the handle are formed with the depending ilanges 8 for reinforcing purposes. An opening 9 is provided adjacent the outer end of the handle so that the remover may be hung on a nail ornother suitable object.
In Figs. 5"and 6 of the drawing a bottle -neck is shown at I 0 and provided with the bead II around its mouth portion. This is of usual wellknown construction and the bead II is adapted to be engaged by the usual corrugated nange I2 of the bottle cap indicated at I3. The usual cork sealing disc, within the flange of the cap, is indicated at I4.
When the bottle cap is to be removed the remover will be positioned, as shown more particularly in- Fig. 5 of the drawing, with the bottle cap positioned within the recess 5 of the head -portion b and surrounded by the depending ange 4 with the inwardly directed portion 1 of the lifting lug or projection positioned slightly below the bottom edge of the cap ange l2. When in this position it will be noted that the upper surface of. the bottle cap is engaged by the surface of the head portion. The handle portion a will be engaged by the user and on depressing the same the parts will assume the positions shown more particularly in Fig. 6 of the drawing with the inlwardly directed portion 1, of the lifting lug, -positioned in engagement with the bottom edge of the cap ange I2. That portion of the iiange 4 opposite the lifting lug will contact the outer surface of the bottle cap ilange I2 and act as a fulcrum so that on further depression of the han'- dle the cap will be raised from the bottom mouth without any engagement of the remover with the bottle neck and thus there is no possibility of cracking the glass.
In Fig. 6. of the drawing the bottle cap is slightly raised from the mouth of the bottle and it can be readily seen by reference to either Fig. 5 o1 Fig. 6 of the drawing, that there is no possibility of any part of the remover engaging the glass from which the bottle is made and thereedge of the flange of the cap and an oppositely disposed abrupt ange having its lower end adapted to engage the side face of the cap flange at a point substantially below the top portion of said cap flange when the head portion is rocked with reference to the cap to tip the flange and thereby create a fulcrum while oppositely raising the lifting lug into engagement with the bottom edge of the cap flange, the location of said lower end of the ilange relative to the lifting lug being such that while the latter will be maintained in engagement with the bottom edge .of the skirt of the cap it will move outwardly under the action of the fulcrum and away from contact with the bottle during removal of the cap.

A bottle cap remover of the class described including separately formed head. and handle portions, the latter having an opening therethrough and the former a projection iitting said opening and a ledge portion surrounding said projection and underlying the handle portion around said opening, a depending cap-engaging lug at one portion of the head in line with the handle portion, a depending flange at an edge of the head opposite said lug in line with said capengaging lug and adapted to engage the outer face of the flange of the cap to afford a. iulcrumI point substantially below the top of said flange, and means interlocking the head with the handle to secure them together in reinforced relationship constituted by said interfitting projection and opening comprising means fastening the overlying portions of the handle and ledge portion preventing disalignment of the cap-engaging lug, flange-fulcrum and handle.
