Application med June 15, 1927. Serialllo. 199,005.
My invention'relates -to match box holder and has for its purpose. the provision of ai holder of extremely simple, inexpensive and y suitable construction, which is capable of be-v l4i ing readily appliedto the steering wheel of an automobile so as to be within convenient Vreach 'of the operator to permit the withdrawal and lighting of matches for lighting cigarettes, cigars and the like.
It is also a purpose of my invention to provide a match box holder as an advertising novelty, the holder accommodating an adverl tisin card in addition to the match box whic is in full viewv of the operator of the vehicle when the holder is in applied position upon the steering wheel.
I will describe only oneform of match box holder embodying my invention, and will then oint out the novel features thereof in i the c aim.
In the accompanying drawings: Fig. 1 is a view showing in top plan one form of match box holder embodying my invention in applied.- position to a steering wheel;
Fig. 2 is a view showing the holder in bot-y tom plan and in applied position to the steerinwheel spoke; n ig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken 30 on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a detail-view showing the match box holder in perspective. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. y i i Referring specifically to the drawings, my invention in its present embodiment comprises a container of rectangular form end of a size to receive the conventional pocket size match box. The container is formed of any suitable material, preferabl rubber. The bottom wall 15 of the container is provided with companion attaching flanges 16 preferably formed integral with the container and hence, of the same material. They are disposed in converging relation to each other along their lines of connection with the back of the container as illustrated in Fig. 2, in i order that they may co-operate to provide an open ended pocket of tapering form for the purpose of conformingy to the tapering contour of a lsteerin vwheelspoke, and in amanl ner to have we ging. engagement therewith ment longitudinally lon" the spoke. The fianges 16 Aare sufficiently flexible toypermit outwardl flaring thereof, anl operation necessary to apply the flanges to the spoke. It will be understood 'that wherethe container and flanges are formed of rubber, the rubber will be vulcanized to a degree suiiicient t0 cause the flanges to return to their original positions following flexin thereof when applying the same-to the spo e.
As shown in Fig. 3, the upper end of the container is open to permit the insertion of the match box 18 to allow the projection of the match containing drawer 17 incident to removal of matches from the box. The
drawer can be projected from'the` upper end of the container by extendin the finger through an opening 19 in the lbwer end of the box. Access to the scratching surface 20 of the match box is had through an opening 21 in one side of the container, and preferably the right side when the holder is in applied position.
In order to utilize the holder as an advertising novelty, provision is made for holding a card 22 therein and in a manner to display the advertising matter thereon. As shown in Fig. 3 the container is provided interiorly, adjacent its top side with a pair of lips 23 extending inwardly from the opposite sides of the container and in spaced relation to the top thereof so as to provide intervening channels coextensive `in length with the container in which are received the longitudinal edges of the card 22. The card is inserted through the upper open end of the container, and when in applied position the advertising thereon is displayed through an openin 24 provided in the top of the container. hus the advertising card is at all times in view of the operator of the vehicle.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of matchbox holder embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications so as to be locked `against', accidental `movemay be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
1 claim as my invention:
An advertising display device comprising a container formed of elastic materlal and provided with spaced apart channels for the reception of the edges of a display card, and
upon the spoke of a vehicle steering wheel,
theA container being open at one end so that a match box may be inserted in or Withdrawn from the container.
