WINDOW FASTENER.
Application led May 21,
This invention relates to window fasteners. Objects of this invent-ion are to provide a novel form of window fastener which may be readily thrown into operation to limit the relative motion of the two sashes and to provide such a fastener which may be very readily thrown out of operation when the sashes are closed, the parts being pivotally or foldably carried to provide an unobstructed upper portion for the sashes and permit complete opening of the window when the device is not in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a window fastener which is of very simple and cheap construction and may be readily applied.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary face view of a portion of the window showing the sashes in closed position;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 9.-2 of Figure l.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the window casing l slidably carries a lower sash 2 and an upper sash 3. The upper sash has screwed therein a small eyelet 4 which loosely carries a small ring 5. This ring stands approximately vertically when the parts are in operative posit-ion and carries a similar ring, preferably of slightly larger size, as indicated at 6. The eyelet 4 may be readily screwed inwardly into the side of the upper sash, as illustrated.
The lower sash carries at its upper end a clip 7 having upstanding arms 8 between rod 9 is pivotally mounted and is adapted to be swung into the folded position or horizontal position shown in dotted lines in Figure l, or into the full line upright position shown in Figures l and 2. When in the latter position, the parts are adapted to be interlocked by merely rocking the ring 6 over the upper end of the rod 9. Thereafter, the sashes may be relatively moved a predetermined limited extent, depending on the length of the rod 9.
It is impossible to detach the ring from the outer side of the window when the parts are in fastened position, although the window may be left partly open. However,
1927, Serial No. 193,186.
from the inner side of the window, it is a very easy matter to unfasten the parts when the window is closed, as it is merely necessary to rockthe ring 6 upwardly out of engage` ment with the upper end of the rod 9. Thereafter, the rod 9 is folded into the horizontal or dotted line position shown in Figure l, thus permitting complete opening of the windows.
It will be seen that a very simple and effective type of window fastener has been provided which may be applied to window sashes with the utmost ease without detracting from the appearance thereof and which may be easily manipulated to either fasten the windows, permitting limited relative motion, or may be folded down out of the way to permit complete opening of the window.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.
I claim:
l. In a window latch, the combination of an upper and a lower sash, a rod carried by the lower sash and adapted to project upwardly, and a ring swingingly carried by theV upper sash and adapted to be swung over the upper end Y being adapted to freely slide upon the rod and to limit the relative motion of the upper and lower sashes.
2. In a window latch, the combination of an upper and a lower sash, a rod pivotally mounted upon the upper end of the lower sash and adapted to extend either vertically upwardly or to be folded downwardly into a horizontal position adjacent the upper face of the lower sash, a member secured to the upper sash and having a swingingly mounted ring adapted to be slipped over the upper end of the rod when the rod is in vertical position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State o Wisconsin.
LUKE EDWARD MURPHY.
