GUARD FOR IBREASTPINS.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,808, dated March 10, 1857.

T 0 all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES M. Ross, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Guards to Breastpins and will apply also to Ladies Cuff-Pins and Gentlemens Shawl-Pins with equal security, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings of the same, which represent a pin with my improvements attached and one with the modern mode of securing the pin.

The obj ect of my invention is to insure the wearers against the annoyance and danger of losing their pins, of their getting loose and falling on the ground which frequently destroys the ornament or very much injures them, a diiiiculty well known to all; and a result never before so easily attained, and rendering it so little trouble to the wearer, being as easily adjusted as the former mode.

To enable others skilled in the art to make, construct and use my invention I will now proceed to describe my device in detail.

The ornament, (A) shows the side on which the pin (y) is attached and secured by the guard (a) now commonly used. (B) shows a vertical view of the same.

C shows the side of the ornament on which the pin, g, is attached and secured by the guard, embracing my improvement. (D) shows a vertical section of the same.

c, shows a view of the pin hinge which is the same in both drawings and where attached to the ornament; the dotted lines a" a* show the rivets passing through the pin and hinge confining them together, which is the common mode of doing the same; d, shows a vertical view of the hinge when the pin is not attached to it which is the same in both drawings; e, shows an end view of a guard now commonly used to secure the pin, opposite the end attached to the hinge joint, which is exceedingly liable to get loose, and the wearer thereby lose the pin; f' shows an end view of my improved guard which should be made of elastic metal.

I avoid the difficulties above described by making an additional guard around the modern guard now used as shown by the drawing, and should the pin get out of the modern guard, the means employed by me still holds the pin safe and secure by the additional guard starting from g, passing around to 7L, as shown by the drawing of the same, where the pin passes between the two guards which entrance is smaller than the pin to prevent the pin from gettingout; the pin also should be made of elastic metal and so adjusted that the inclination of the pin will be in the line, z', z', the whole of which renders it next to impossible to lose the pin; which is now a very common occurrence and subjects the wearer to much annoyance; j, j, j j show a series of guards drawn embracing my principle.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letl ters Patent is- The additional guard g, L, as applied in the manner and for the purposes substan tially as set forth.
