Description
 i TED STATES PATENT OFFIC.
JAMES RABBETH, OF MANSFIELD, CONNECTICUT.
DIAPER-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 4,938, dated January 21, 1847.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JAMES RABBETH, of Mansfield, in the county of Tolland and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Pin for Fastening Persons Clothing; and I do hereby declare t-hat the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a pin with two tubes (one fastened to the head, and the other to cover the point when used, and removable therefrom at pleasure) which tubes are connected to gether by means of an elastic band, in such a manner as to hold and keep the pin in its place when worn or used, and to prevent the point of the pin from piercing or otherwise in any manner injuring the person wearing or using the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I make in the first place two tubes of metal of about one fourth of an inch in length with two flat sides, into one of which tubes I insert'and firmly secure the head or blunt end of a pin; the other tube is designed to receive and cover the point of the pin when in use, and may be put on to said point and removed therefrom atpleasure. I then provide an elastic band composed of india rubber or other elastic substance or materials, of sufficient length doubled, to connect together the two tubes when attached to t-he pins, and to hold in its place the tube designed for the point of the pin when the same is in use. This band I put over the ends and upon the flat sides of the tubes, and then insert each of the tubes with the band so arranged upon the same, into a metal cap so constructed and tted as to confine the band closely and firmly to the tubes. When the pin is thus completed the two tubes appear to be connected together by two bands fastened to opposite sides of Y the tubes ;-all which is shown by the accompanying drawing.
To fasten the pin into a garment it is only necessary to insert the point of the pin into the movable tube; and to remove it from a garment, it is necessary only to take the movable tube from the point of the pin, which the elasticity of the band connecting the two tubes together will permit to be done with ease and facility.
