Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL S. RITTER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HERNIAL TRUSS.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. RITTER, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trusses; and I do hereby declare that the following is full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view of inside of truss; with pad lifted. Fig. 2 is a section of truss through pad and spring; showing pad in position for use. 3 is a view of truss with double pad. Fig. 4 is a view of main spring and pad attachment.
Similar characters of reference in the several gures denote the same part.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing the truss of a straight spring to be bent around the front of the weaver by a belt inclcsing it; to which spring the pad is so attached as to have an elastic bearing against the body.
The details of construction and operation are as follows.
In the drawing A is a straight spring, run into the belt B, as shown in Fig. l so that a portion of the spring will be exposed for the attachment of the pad. This attach- 16,497, dated January 27, 1857.
ment is eifected by the passage of the spring A through a slide piece C, to which the pad is attached as is shown in Fig. 1. The pad is adjusted in any position upon the spring and held by. a screw a.. Attached to the piece b on the back of the pad P, is a spring f, pressing against the slide c when the pad is in position for use, as shown in Fig. 2. In double pads there are two slides and two springs.
In use the spring A is bent around the front of the body and secured by a buckle and strap on the belt B. The spring f is thus caused to give the pad P an elastic pressure against the body.
The advantage of this construction lies in giving elasticity to the pad without the pressure against the back, which exists when bent springs of ordinary trusses are worn.
I claimrIhe combination of the springs A and f with the pad attachment, substantially as, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
S. S. RITTER.
