TRUSS-PAD.

Speccation of Letters Patent No. 19,914, dated April 13, 1858.

' To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WM. F. DAILY, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Truss-Pads or Supporters for Hernia or Rupture; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the-same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view of my improved truss pad attached to the truss, body strap or spring. Fig. 2, is a view of the back of the pad. Fig. 3, is a horizontal cent-ral section of the same, supposed to be in the position used. Fig. 4, is a similar section toFig. 3, and shows a slight modification of the pad.

Similar letters of reference in each of the several figures indicate corresponding parts.

The nature of my invention consists in` constructing a hollow truss pad or supporter for hernia, with a series of small perforations in its front plate and enlarged open ings in its back plate so as to allow of a hea-ling substance being brought in contact with the body to aid in curing rupture, and also a perfect ventilation or healthful circulation of air through it and over or about that part of the body covered by, and with which the pad or supporter comes directly and constantly in contact.

My invention also consists in attaching the pad to the main spring of the truss or body strap by means of the combined agency of a groove or recess in the back of the pad, an oblong slot in the main spring and a single set screw, whereby every facility of adjusting the pad speedily by simply operating one screw is afforded and at the same time a liability of the pad twisting around and rubbing avoided.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to decribe its construction and operation more minutely.

The convex front plate a, is perforated over a greater part of its surface with small perforations o, o, as illustrated. Its flat back plate Z9, is also madeopen as at o', o. The holes or openings c, o', allow of some healing substance being brought in contact with the body, and also admit air into the chamber CZ, of the pad; and the small perforations o, c, allow the air to come pleasant.

in contact with the body and cool the same, and thus keep the part pressed upon, in a healthy condition and render the wearing of a truss or supporter more comfortable and In order to attach this pad to the main spring B, of the truss body straps or spring C, I form a deep plain or dovetail groove C', in its back-plate or side b, and provide an oblong slot D, in the main spring. The parts thus constructed are placed together as shown in all the figures, and confined by a single set screw E, which passes through the slot and the center of the back plate of the pad, or through said plate and a bearing formed on the inside of the same as illustrated in the several figures. This mode of attaching is very simple and cheap, and secures the pad, when only one screw is used, owing to the spring being let down into the recess C, from twisting and rubbing. It also aords great facility for adjustment, as only one screw requires to be operated.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl. Constructing a hollow trussA pad or supporter A, for hernia with a series of small perforations c, in its front plate a, in combination with enlarged openings in its back plate so as to allow of some healing substancel being brought in contact with the body and also ventilation or a perfect and healthful circulation of air through it and over or about that part of the body covered by and with which the pad or supporter A comes directly and constantly in Contact, substantially as set forth.

Attaching the pad A, 4to the main spring of the truss or body strap C, by means of the combined agency of a recess or groove C, in the back of the pad, an oblong slot D, in the main spring and a single set screwl E, whereby every facility of adjusting the pad A, speedily, by simply operating one screw E, is afforded, and at the same time a liability of the pad A, twisting around and rubbing avoided, substantially as set forth.
