J. SCHULTHEISS PIPE CUTTER Filed Oct. 24,, 1927 I 1 I HHH Patented July 3, 1928.
JOHN SGHULTHEISS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLA ND.
PIPE CUTTER.
Application filed october 24, 1927. Serial No. 228,241.
This invention relates topipe cutters and has special reference to a cutter for thin walled pipe such as stove pipe and the l ke.
One important object of the invention 1s to improve and simplify the general con struction of devicesof this character.
A second important object of the nvention is to provide an improved device of this character wherein provision is'made for supporting pipes of =jdifi'erent sizes in a simple and efficient mannen' I A third important object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement of knlfe in such a device.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter-ap arent, the inven tion consists in general 0 certain novel de tails of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings l1ke charactors of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly 1n section, showing the complete device.
Figure 2 is a front view, partly In section, of the invention.
Figure 3 is a detail plan view of the bottom portion of one of the slzing segments used herewith.
Figure 4.- is a detail section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
In the construction of the invention as herein disclosed there is provided a clamp member having an upper horizontal leg 10 and a lower horizontal leg 11 connected by a vertical member 12. On the extremity of the lower leg 11 is a boss 13 threaded interiorly to receive a clamping screw 14 having at its lower end a butterfly nut 15 and at its upper end a swivel toothed head 16. The arm 11 is about one half the length of the arm 10 so that the swivel head 16 comes 4.1 centrally beneath the armlO and the device may thus be clamped securely on a table, bench or the like. Through the arm 10 extends a horizontal opening 17 wherein slides a bracket arm 18 which is secured in adto justed position by means of a butterfly set screw 19. The forward end of the arm 18 is bent downwardly as at 20. The end 20 has extending therethrough a pair of butterfly head screws 21 which are threaded at as their upper ends into a clampin block 22 and was, adjacent their heads, a knife an efficient device of the porting'block 23. The block 22 lies above the arm20 while the block 23 lies below said arm and betweentheblock 22 and the arm 20 fits thefoot 2450f a guide segment25 which is in the form of a skeleton frame as can be seen by Figure 2. The foot 24 is provided with a slot 26 through which :the screws 21 pass and by loosening the screws the segment may be withdrawn or replaced, it being the intention to use segments of different radii for the different sizes of pipes. The" block 23' is provided with a centrally disposed opening 27 through which passes the shank 28of a knife blade 29 which pro- Jects above the top of the block 22 and is held in projected position by a set screw 30,
In using the device the proper size guide segment 25 is placed in position and the screws 21 tightened so that the parts are clamped together. into the guide segment so that the knife blade 29 cuts a hole through the pipe at the lower part thereof. The pipe is then rotated by grasping with the hands or in any other suitable manner and the knife blade will cut around so as to sever the pipe into two lengths.
There has thus been provided a simple and kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the mate rial spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is: y
1. In a pipe cutter, a bracket, clamping screws extendingthrough said bracket, a clamping head carried by said screws in spaced relation to said bracket, a knife projecting through said head between said screws, and an arcuate guide frame having a foot positioned between said head and bracket and clamped removably on the bracket by said head.
2. In a pipe cutter, a bracket, clamping screws extending through said bracket, a clamping head carried by said screws in spaced relation tosaid bracket, a knife projecting through said head between said screws, and an arcuate guide having a foot positioned between said head and.
Then the pipe is forced Ill) bracket and clamped removably on the bracket by said head, said foot being slotted to slidingly embrace said screws.
3. In a pipe cutter, a bracket, clamping screws extending through said bracket, a clamping head carried by said screws in spaced relation to said bracket, a knife projecting through said head between said screw-s, an arcuate guide frame having a foot positioned between said head and bracket and clamped removably on the bracket by said head, said foot being slotted to slidingly embrace said screws, said head and frame being on one side of the bracket,
said screws being provided with shouldered heads on the opposite side of the bracket, a knife carrying head engaged beneath the shoulders of the screw heads against the bracket, said knife carrying head having an opening therein, a shank on said knife fitting said opening, and a set screw extending into the knife carrying head and engaging said shank.
4. In a pipe cutter, a bracket, clamping screws extending throuh said bracket, a clamping head carried y said screws in spaced relation to said bracket, a knife projecting through said head between said screws, an arcuate guide frame having a foot positioned between said head and bracket and clamped removably on the bracket by said head, said foot being slotted to slidingly embrace said screws, said head and frame being on one side of the bracket, said screws being provided with shouldered heads on the opposite side of the bracket, a knife car-vying head engaged beneath the shoulders of the screw heads against the bracket, said knife carrying head having an opening therein, a shank on said knife fitting said opening, a set screw extending into the knife carrying head and engaging said shank, a securing clamp having said bracket adjustably engaged therewith, and means to hold the bracket in adjusted relation to the see curing clamp.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
J OHN, SCHULTHEISS.
