UNITED STATES PATENT A QFFICE.
AMERIGUSR. UNDERDOWN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVER COATS.
Specification forming part of 'Letters Patent No. 167,139, dated August 24, 1875; application filed May 21,- 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AMERICUS R. UNDER- DOWN, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, haveinvented an Improved Overcoat, of which they following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to make an overcoat which will effectually protect the knees of the wearer when seated; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a view of my improved overcoat, and Fig. 2 a sketch illustrating the object of the same.
An ordinary overcoat, such as is usually made of oiled cloth, for the use of car-drivers and others is objectionable on account of its tendency to spread open and expose the knees of the wearer to rain and snow when he is sitting down, a tendency which is due to the arrangement in a vertical line of the front edges of the coat, which are buttoned together. I overcome this objection by making these edges inclined, as shown in Fig. 1, so that when the coat is buttoned up and the wearer is seated the coat will present an undivided surface across the knees, as shown in Fig. 2, and will effectually exclude rain and snow, further protection being obtained by providing one of these inclined edges with an overlapping flap, which covers the joint between the two edges, and effectually prevents the entrance of water at this joint.
I claim as my invention- An overcoat in which the front edges are inclined from top to bottom of the coat, and are combined with an overlapping flap, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AMERIOUS R. UNDERDOWN.
