IMPROVEMENT IN HANDLE ATTACHMENTS FOR VALISES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,011, dated August 24, 1875; application filed July 16, 1875.

To all whom' it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE O. MONROE, of Newark, in the county of- Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Handle Attachments for Valises, 860., of which the following is a specification:

The handles of valises have been made with a metal tip at each end, connecting with staples that pass through the bag-frame, and are riveted. These rigid staples do not accommod-ate themselves to the direction of the strain upon the handle, and in cases where there are loose or swinging rings between the handle ends and the staples upon the bagframe the handle causes these rings to fall to one side or the other, and the leather be comes disfigured.

My invention consists in a handle attachment for a valise composed of a T-headed loop and a slotted plate, the T-head being inserted through the slot in the plate, and secured to the bag-frame by the plate, and the loop receiving the metal tip of the handle, so that the loop is free to swing to conform to the strain upon the handle 5 but said loop being held up by the T-head does not fall over as the ordinary ring attachment, but simply swings to accommodate the direction of the strain upon the handle.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of the handle and the loops. Big. 2 is a perspective view of the loop and T-head, and Fig. 3 is a plan of the attaching-plate.

A portion of the bag-frame is shown at a and I remark that the handle is to be connected at any desired place upon the frame.

The loop b is made with an oblong opening or eye, and a stem and T-head or-base, c, in one piece, and standing, preferably, in aplane at right angles to the plane of the loop. The plate at is slotted at z, and raised sufficiently to allow the cross-portion c of the T to occupy the transverse groove thus formed, and the T-head and shank or stem are of a size to pass through the longitudinal slot in d, and then be turned around with the T-head occupying such groove and being securely held therein by riveting such plate to the valiseframe. The handle-tips h are passed through these loops b, and riveted to the handle It.

It will now be apparent that the T-head retains the loop, so that it will not fall over sidewise, and will simply swing to accommodate the direction of strain on the handle, and the extent of motion is limited by the lower angles of the loop swinging against the plate 01 or its rivets.

The suspending straps, sometimes employed to carry the valise, may be connected therewith by snap-hooks at the ends of the straps being passed through the loops b.

I claim as my invention The valise-handle attachment, composed of the T-headed loop I) c and slotted plate (1 riveted to the valise frame, as and for the purposes set forth.
