IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENDER'S.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [66,974, dated August 24,1875; application filed July 6,1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT HENRY EDDY, of Boston, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful invention having reference to Pantaleon- Suspenders 5 and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a view 'of a pair of Suspenders provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top 'view and Fig. 3 a transverse section of the back-connection of the shoulder-straps. Fig. 4 is a view of the back-connection, as separated from the shoulder-straps.

The invention is specially intended for the Suspenders represented and described in the United States Patent No. 115,7 22, dated June 6, 1871, and granted to A. G. Eddy as assignee of the undersigned, the inventor.

In the drawings of such patent, a backconnection is represented as consisting of a single band extended from one to the other of the back or shoulder straps, it being mentioned in the specification that the said connection may be in two parts or straps, united by a buckle, or a lacing, or may be a single elastic or inelastic strap.

The nature of the present invention may be said to consist, in the abstract, in suspenders having an adjustable back-connection to the shoulder-straps-that is, a back-connecvtion made so as to be adjustable or variable in length, or adjustable or movable on the shoulder-straps lengthwise thereof, or both adjustable or variable in length and adjusta` ble or movable on the shoulder-straps.

It is found, owing to the Variations of distance between the two back-buttons of the waists of the pantaloons of different individuals, or to variations in the sizes of different persons, or in the distances of the pantaloonwaists from the shoulders ot the wearers, that one will require alonger back-connection, or to have it arranged either higher or lower, than another, in order to insure the desirable iitting of the Suspenders, therefore the object of the present invention is to enable the requisite adjustment to be made as occasion may require.

In the drawings, the main yor back and shoulder straps are shown at A A, and their back-connection at B. The two pairs of front button-straps are represented at C D C D, each pair being extended from a buckle, E, whichreceives one of the back or shoulder straps A A, and when the Suspenders are in use is to be arranged at or in close proximity with the shoulder or the base thereof of the wearer. Each pair of the straps C D is exhibited as composed of two branch straps, ct a,

and two straps, b b, each of the branch straps Y being connected with one of the straps b by a buckle, o. The straps b b are provided with button-holes, as shown.

In Figs. l and 4 the adjustable back-connection is shown as fastened at its ends to two metallic slides, F F, formed as shown in the latter ligure, each slide being made to receive one of the shoulder-straps, which is passed twice through the slide and over and across the bridge e thereof.

The back-connection is also represented as composed of two straps, f g, which straps are exhibited in Figs. 2 and 3 as lapped on one another.

In Fig. 3 each strap is shown as provided with a series of button-holes, h h h, arranged in it at equal or about equal distances apart, to receive two buttons or studs, t' i. In case buttons are used, one may be fixed to one strap near its end, and the other to the other strap near its end, each button being arranged so as to button into the strap to which it may not be fastened.

I am aware that shoulder-braces have had their brace-straps, or those which go around the arms of a person when the brace is in use, connected by an adjustable back-connection. Also, that a combined suspender and shoulderbrace has been constructed of a dorsal strap and two shoulder-straps, having two adjustable back-straps extended in opposite directions from the dorsal strap to the shoulderstraps, and adjustable on the latter lengthwise thereof. l make no claim to such, my invention having no reference to any such shoulderbraces.

In making my said invention I have combined with the Suspenders represented in the aforesaid Patent No. 115,722, granted on an invention made by me, auxiliary devices whereby the back-connection of such suspenders is rendered adjustable in length, or not only so, but adjustable either up or down on the shoulder-straps. It is, therefore, the particular Suspenders, constructed as hereinbefore explained and represented, and not a shoulder-brace or a combined suspender and shoulder-brace, havin g an adjustable back-connection, as mentioned, that constitutes my present invention, the adjustable back-connection enabling the Suspenders to be properly adjusted and applied to persons, as circumstances may require; in other Words, it enables the buckles of the shoulder-straps to be adjusted laterally, and held in the hollows of the shoulders, so as not to ride upon or over set forth.
