Application filed. September 25, 1926. Serial No. 137,743.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tools, and more particularly to a tool which is adapted to be used by car inspectors whose duty it is to examine the journal bearings of railway rolling stock. The main object of my invention is the provision of a tool which combines in its construction a lid-lifting device whereby the lids of the bearing boxes may be quickly raised and also a blade or spoon-like memher .which is adaptedlor use in replacing any packing waste which may have worked out from under the journal.
Another object'of my invention is the provision of a tool of the above character formed with a handle which may be readily grasped in the hand of an operator and the tool con veniently used for the purpose specified, the handle being of such construction as to not necessarily tire the hand of the operator during the examination of a great many bearing boxes.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, the combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing the'tool is illustrated in perspective. 7
Referring now more particularly to the device, 1 indicates the shank, one end of which is bent to form an offset hand loop 2 extending wholly to one side of the shank, the upper transverse portion of which is flattened and then curled to form an arcuate gripping surface 3, while the extreme end iswelded or otherwise secured to the shank as at 5 to form the hand loop.
The shank 1 terminates at its other end in a flattened portion 6, theouter end of which is considerably thinner than the inner end; and formed within the outer end is a V-shaped notch 7 providing sharpened prongs 8. The latter structure is curved so as to be directly under the handle and is formed into a plate or spoon-like member which is adapted to be engaged with the lubricant bearing waste for replacing the same beneath the journal bearing if necessary. Extending laterally from the juncture of the shank and blade on the opposite side from the handle is a hook member 9 which is used for engaging the lid or cover of a journal box in order that the same may be quickly and readily opened. Thehook 9 is arcuate shaped, the curve being toward the handle end of the shank to insure the engagement with the lid of the stufiing box.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that I have provided a simple and inexpensive device which includes means for opening or raising the cover of a journal box and means whereby the lubricant bean ing packing may be returned to its eiiective position if found necessary as the waste will be engaged between two prong-like members 8 and readily forced back beneath the journal or trunnion of the wheel. The construction 01 the handle is such as to permit the same to be readily graspedand the arcuate surface 3 forms an easy rest for the palm of the hand so as not to necessarily tire the hand of the user, while the otlset position of said handle further adds to the convenience of its use. The device is of such simple and inexpensive, construction that it can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a very low cost.
While Ihave shown and described the preferred embodiment ofrmy invention it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made for carr ing out my invention in practice without eparting from the spirit of the invention or the scope oi the appended claim. V 7 Having described the invention, what I claim is A journal-box tool comprising a shank, a handle formed at one end of the shank, said handle having an arcuate-shaped grip and extending wholly to one side of the shank,
aprong blade at the other end, said blade ALEX JOHNSON;
