SEWING MACHINE TOOL Filed NOV. 28, 1956 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Aiiorneus Patented Nov. 2, 1937 UNITED STATES ATEN 1 Claim.
My invention relates generally to combination tools, and particularly to a tool for use in adjusting and repairing sewing machines, and an important object of my invention is to provide an arrangement of this character which greatly facilitates the adjustment and maintenance of sewing machines and the like.
Another important object of my invention is to provide a tool of the character indicated above which combines in convenient and scientifically correct relation, as well as in cooperative combination, the various shapes and outlines effective for the particular purposes for which they are designed when applied separately, and which coact when the device is utilized as a whole.
Other important objects of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings:-
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the embodiment showing the knife in open dotted line position.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the removable screw-driver.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through Figure 2 approximately on the line 55 and looking upwardly in the direction of the arrow.
Figure 6 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through Figure 1 approximately on the line 6-6 and looking toward the right in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 7 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through Figure 1 approximately on the line 1-7.
Figure 8 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through Figure 4 approximately on the line 8-8.
Figure 9 is a perspective View of the lower jaw of the device showing the belt piercing spike, and in dotted lines the shearing knife.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the device of the present invention comprises the one-piece handle and jaw member 5, the one-piece handle and jaw member 6, and the pivot 1 which connects the jaws operatively together.
Each of the members 5 and 6 comprises a substantially straight portion 8 to be grasped in the hands of the operator, which at the forward end thereof merges into an arcuate portion 9 which is extended at one side as indicated by the numerals Ill and beveled as indicated by the numerals H to furnish opposed arcuate jaws with interior gripping surfaces [2 for gripping around a sewing machine balance wheel for loosening and tightcning the same as may be required.
At the forward ends of the arcuate portions 9 are the cut-away portions I3 provided with the openings [4 which receive the pivot l' and immediately forward of these are the transverse semicylindrical notches l5 which cooperate in providing a wire cutter arrangement at the rear of the respective tapered jaws I6, [1, for cutting wire inserted therein when the handles 8 are brought together to the closed position illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings.
In the described position of the members 5 and 5 the fiat surfaces I 8 of the jaws come together so as to position the lateral opening [9 fully over the punch which projects from the surface l8 of the lower jaw H as is clearly shown in Figures 4 and 5. The punch is removably threaded into an opening 2! and the lower jaw IT projects above the surface I8 of the jaw l1.
Between the openings l5 and the opening l9 are transverse semi-cylindrical openings 22 and 23 which are registered when the jaws are closed as indicated in Figure 4 of the drawings, and at one end these openings have cutting blades 24, 25 as illustrated in Figure 8 for cleanly cutting off the machine belting, which is round in cross section, while the surfaces of these openings 22 and 23 keep the belt contracted so as to prevent distortion thereof during the cutting.
A shearing knife 26 is fastened on one side of the lower jaw I! as indicated in Figures 1 and 9 and provided with a slanting cutting edge 27 which lies along and adjacent the punch 20 of the opening l9 and above the meeting line of the jaws, for the purpose of cutting the belt off as the holes are made therein to receive the wire clip for attaching the ends of the belt together, all in one operation.
On the member 5 the handle 3 has in its free end a longitudinal opening 28 which is closed by a threaded plug 29 which has on one end a screw-driver 38 and a threaded boss 3| and at its opposite end another threaded boss 32 which is to be engaged in the threaded opening when the screw-driver 3D is in use. the handle is provided with a recess 33 in its side in which is mounted by means of a screw 34 a flexible small screw-driver 35 which can be swung out to operative position when required.
On another side of the handle portion 8 of the Further this end of member 5 is mounted a casing 36 in which a knife 31 is pivoted as indicated in Figures 1 and 2, capable of being swung into and beyond the dotted line position shown in Figure 1 from the closed position also shown in dotted lines in Figure 1,
- the casing being mounted to the side of the handle by means of screws 38 and 39, respectively, the knife being pivoted on the screw 39.
The free end of the handle portion 8 of the member 6 may be tapered and pointed as indicated by the numeral 40 to provide a capable ream for reaming the holes of the belt and for use as a pry in removing the metal strips which hold the ends of the belt together and must be removed from the holes formed in the ends of the belt.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in the materials, and in the structure and arrangement of the parts within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the subjoined claim.
What is claimed is:--
In a tool of the pliers type for use with machine belts, a pair of handles provided with cooperating clamping jaws and pivoted together for limited opening movement of said jaws, one jaw having mounted thereon a punch element extending from the inner face thereof and spaced at its outer end from the other jaw in the open position of said jaws to permit the insertion of a belt between said punch and said other jaw, the other jaw having a punch clearance aperture therein, and a shearing blade on one side of the punch mounting jaw opposite said punch, where'- by the punching and shearing operations are concluded simultaneously, said punch extending slightly beyond the opposite edge portion of said blade for slight penetration of a belt prior to shearing thereof, whereby the belt is securely held in position relative to said blade preparatory to shearing.
