Description

Jun@ E8, T1935. vJ, LE E. ARBUCKLE 2,005,176
CAMPER" s TOOL Filed Dec. 16, 1952 vided at one end with a socket for the removable Patented June 1s, 1935 'l 'y atomic@ John .Arbuckleelolumbusp inmediatamente This invention relates to improvements in campers tools, and has for its primary object the provision of animproved combination tool in the form of an ax wherein the handle thereof is proreception of a hunting knife, the construction of the handle being such that it will serve to com-v pletely enclose and conceal the knife when the latter is positioned within the socket, so that the ax may be manually wielded in the usual manner without any interference on the part of the encased knife.
It is another object of the invention toconstruct the ax handle to include a longitudinally extending socket which opens lto one end 'of the handle, the socket being of non-circular form in cross section to conform to the configuration of the knife handle, whereby rotation of the knife when the latter is positioned in the socket will be precluded and accidental removal of the knife from its operative position in the handle prevented.
Y A further object of the invention rests in providingr frictional locking means 'for' positively retaining the knife in its secured position within the handle, whereby to require the application of positive pressures in order tov effect the withdrawal of the knife from the handle. y
' With these and other objects in view', which will appear as the description proceeds, the in- -vention consists in the novel vfeatures of construction, combination of elements and arrange-` ments of parts hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved combination tool comprising the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the handle of the tool and illustrating the knife in its normal contained position within the ax handle;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through the handle, the knife being shown in edge elevation;
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional View on the plane indicated bythe line 4 4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a similar view on the une 5-5 ofy Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the tool ,comprising the present invention partakes f generally ofthe form of anax, such 'as that used by woodsmen, campers, hunters or the likeand comprises the usual metallic head I lof conven-k tionalconstruction and configuration. Connected with the head I is ahandle 2 by which the ax 11e, 1932i slrgifal NO 647,55? o '1 claim. (Chica-say may be grasped and used in Va"conventional man#V I ner. `In this instance, however, the ax is pro-'- vided with a longitudinally extending socket 3, closed at oneend and open at its other, and arranged to be removably positionedin the socket 3 is a knife rwhich comprises a handle yIl and'- an elongated sharpened blade 5. The Vbladel 5 ofthe knife'v is received Within the inner reduced or restricted portion 6 ofthe socket 3, while the knife handle 'r4 is disposed in the enlarged and non-circular outer portion 'I of the socket.
To positivelyretain the knife in its contained position withinrthe socket.3,the outer endof the handle 24 is providedwith a metallic sleeve'or ferrule 8, the latter including a nange 9 disposed Within the open end portion of the socket 3. The
knife handle '4, vkas shown in Fig. 5, is provided, L
with .a transversely disposed opening in which is` positioned a metallic casing IIJ, the latterbeing adapted to receive a small coil spring? II, which normally tends to force a metallicI ball outwardly y to the limit of its movement as afforded bythe beaded end of the casing II). Normally, the ball I2 projects a slight distance beyond Vthe sideH of the knife handle. Bythis construction, when theknife ispositioned in thesocket, as shown in Fig. 3, the ball I2 willengage with-a shoulder` produced bythe end of the flange 9, which pro-A duces a friction-lock by which the knife is positively retained within the socket of the ax handle and accidental removalV thereofy precluded. If i desired, the extreme outer end of the knife handle v 4v maybe equipped with a knob I3 to facilitate sition c within the ax handle.y
the withdrawal'of the knife from its applied po- In view of the foregoing'it will be. seen/that 1 the present invention provides a convenient and "i compact combination tool particularly'adapted for thev needs of campers or for youtof-door pur-- poses generally. In such pursuits, it is often necessary or convenient to use both a knife and an` J ax and where these tools are provided separately, one or the other is often missing. By combining the same in a single unit, however, this disadvantage is avoided. It will be understood that the socket is comparatively small in regions where the ax handle tapers to a point of its smallest diameter. I IIlhis feature prevents the presence of the socket from weakening the handle or causi'gf'it 'to split or break when used in the ordinary manner.
While I have described what I consider to be the. preferred form of my invention, nevertheless it will be appreciated that its constructional detalls are subject; to some considerable modification and variation Without departing from the essential features of the invention, as the latter are defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In a combinationitool, a handle provided with a longitudinally extending socket opening to one end thereof, the inner part of said socket being of restricted-slot-like formation and the outer portion of said socket towards the endof the handle being of enlarged or greater cross sectional area., the said socket providing shoulders substantially midway of itslength at the points of juncture of the restricted slot-like inner portion with the enlarged outer portion thereof, a
2,oo5,176 n d i V ably positioned in said socket with the blade of the knife received in the restricted slot-like portion of the socket and the handle of the knife in the enlarged outer portion thereof, the end of the knife handle adjoining said blade being engaged with said shoulders to control the inserted positions of the knife Within said socket, a metallic ferrule reenforcing the end of the tool handle adjacent to the open end of said socket, said ferrule being provided with a flange arranged in the socket contiguous to its open end, said ange being formed with a shoulder, and a springvpressed member carried by the knife handle and arranged to engage with the walls of said lastnamed shoulder when the knife is positioned within said socket;v to positively retain said knife Within said socket, said knife being confined against accidental movement when positioned within said socket.
