Description

Mayi, 1928.
J. R. JOHNSON SERVICE DOOR ililffll. F'FIA -HWWH IIIIIIIIII III INVENTOR Filed May 9. 1925 ATTORM EY li atented May 1, 1928.
UNITED STATES JOHN ROBERT OHNSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SERVICE IDOOB.
Application filed May 9,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in service doors and more particularly to a door of this character having incorporated in its construction a plurality of movably mounted handles and drawers. i'he main object of my invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the usual panels ofa door may form one side of the drawers and wherein the drawers are slidably mounted upon suitable supports .ried by the door and adapted to contain various types of small articles.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a service door having a plurality of slidable drawers mounted on a support and said. drawers adapted to be enclosed by means of a protecting casing and if found desirable the exposed side of the door may be formed of glass or the like whereby the drawers may be used as a bookcase.
l Vith the above and other objects in View, my invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the elaim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
1. is a front elevation of a door constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. i
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a door frame having a door 2 hingedly mounted for swinging movement and adapted to close the door Opening 3 in the frame.
As illustrated the door is of a type having a plurality of panels a and these panels are utilized to form a front closing side in the plurality of drawers 5 which are slidably mounted relative to the door by means of the angular brackets 6. The brackets 6 are secured. to one side of the door and the horizontal portions thereof are disposed flush with the lower side of the openings 7 in the door which are normally closed by means of the panels 4.
It will be apparent that the openings 7 in the door are of a size to permit sliding movement of the drawers therethrough and suitable shoulders 8 are formed upon all 1925. Serial No. 29,149. v
sides of these openings against which the edges of the panels 4 abut for limiting the inward movement of the drawers.
In the drawings I have illustrated a service door as normally closing the entrance to closet 9 although it will be apparent that the door may be used in other convenient places and in order to protect the contents of the drawer the metallic casing 10 is provided of substantially rectangular shape and of suitable size to enclose all of the drawers. The ends and edges of the open side of the casing 10 are disposed at right angles to form a flange 11 which, is secured to the inner side of the door in any suitable manner for retaining the casing 10 in position to enclose the drawers.
. It will be apparent from the foregoing that I have provided a simple and inexpensive device of the character set forth wherein a door may be so constructed as to support a plurality of slidable drawers and wherein the front of the drawers will present a panellike appearance to the exterior of'the door and hand knobs 12 may be attached to each of the panels 4: to facilitate the opening and closing of the drawers.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it willbe obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features of construction or de parting from the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In a service door having a plurality of openings formed therein. brackets secured to one side of the door and having horizontal portions disposed in alignment with the lower edges defined. by the openings, drawers slidably received by the brackets and ineluding front walls for closing the openings and said front walls defining panels for the door and being disposed in a plane with the frame thereof, and a metallic casing secured to said side of the door and housing the drawers.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN ROBERT JOHNSON.
