UNITED STATES WILLIAM RIMKE, OF BERWYN, ILLINOIS.
CABINET.
Application filed December 27, 1922.
T all whom itmag/ concern:
Be it known that I, l ViLLIAM RIMKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berwyn, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cabinets, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
One object of my said invention is the provision of a cabinet designed to house articles or devices of various kinds and embodying such a construction that panels thereof may be expeditiously and easily changed for educational purposes and also to suit the taste of prospective purchasers of the cabinet.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a cabinet embodying improved means to support the cover thereof.
Another object is the provision of a cabinet embodying improved means for retaining a receptacle or carrier slidably intro duced into the cabinet.
Another object is the provision in a cabinet of doors so constructed that ornamental panels or educational panels of various kinds may be readily placed in and removed from the doors i To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the. improvement as hereinafter describedand definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specificationz- Figure 1 is a view showing my novel cabinet complete and ready for use.
Figure 2 is a view of the main frame of the cabinet with all removable parts disassociated therefrom.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the said main frame.
Figure 4 is a vertical section of the main frame taken in the plane indicated by the line 44; of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section of the main frame taken in the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure (5 is a vertical section of the main frame taken in the plane indicated by the line 6-6 of Figure 3,i. e., at right angles to Figure 4. v
Figure 7 is a vertical section taken in the plane indicated by the line 77 of Figure3 and showing the side panels of the cabinet as properly arranged in the main frame and also showing the cap pieces in position.
Figure 8 is a top plan view of the main Serial No. 609,264.
frame of the cabinet with the cap pieces properly positioned.
Figure 9 is a detail View utility of the cover support.
Figures 10 to 13 are views illustrative of the construction of the front doors of the cabinet; Figures 11 and 12 being sections taken on the lines 11-l1, and 12-42, respectively, of Figure 10.
Figure 1 is a detail perspective showinga portion of the member 17.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements my novel cabinet comprises a main frame, Figures 2 to 6.
Included in the said main frame are corner spacedinwardly from the side rails 9 as shown. The cap pieces 7 areslotted asdesignated by 13, and the said slots are provided with offsets 14 and are arranged coincident with the grooves 2 and 6 and the spaces between the outer rails 9- an'd the inner rails 11. c The main frame also includes spaced cross-bars 15 located adjacent to the front of the cabinet, and guide rails 16. Drawers obviously may be arranged between and above the cross pieces 15 and supported on the rails 16. For the purpose of preventing casual displacement of the upper drawer or receptacle I provide a retainer made up of a crown bar 17 and depending legs 18, the said legs 18 having vertical tongues 19 to take'into vertical grooves 20 provided at the inner sides of the side walls of the main frame adjacent to the front and the upper end thereof. This construction is shown in Figures 3, 6 and 14, by reference to which it will be apparent that each leg 18 is adapted to rest at its lower end on a rail 16, and that each tongue 19 is at the outer side of its respective leg 18 and is removably arranged in a groove 20. Manifestly when the retainer described is dropped as stated illustrating the into engagement with the main frame the said retainer will serve effectively in preventing displacement or Withdrawal of the drawer on the upper guides 16.
Removably arranged in the sides of the main frame are panes of transparent glass 21, and panels 22, the said panels 22 being arranged back of the panes of glass and being provided with loops or hand grasps 23 at their upper ends. The said panels are adapted to be expeditiously and easily removed upwardly through the slots 13, the offsets of the slots enabling a person to readily grasp the loops or hand grasps at the upper ends of the panels. It will also be noted that fresh panels may, when occasion demands, be lowered through the slots 18 to positions in the main frame back of the panes of glass. For the closure of the said slots 13 I provide removable caps SOhaving offset portions and adapted to be snugly arranged in the slots 13 and the offsets 14 thereof. On the caps are finger pieces 3.1 through the medium of which the caps may be expeditiously and easily removed and as readily replaced in the slots 13 and the offsets 14 of the slots.
My invention contemplates the provision of panels 22 hearing pictures and ornamental designs of various kinds, and in virtue of the construction described it will be manifest that when one panel does not meet with the approval of a prospective purchaser of the cabinet, any number of panels may be placed in the cabinet until the cabinet is equipped with panels suitable to the taste of the purchaser. It will-also be noted thatthe panels may when desired be provided with educational matter on their faces in which event the cabinet may be used to advantage in school rooms, a set of panels being provided in connection with each cabinet, and the panels being changed whenever deemed desirable. In addition to the main :frame and the appurtenances thus far described in detail the cabinet comprises a cover 10 hingedly connected at 41 to the back portion of the top of the main frame, and a cover support 42. The said support 42 is pivotally connected at 43 to the cover 40, Figural) and is notched as designated by 14 to engage a pin 45, bridging a slot 43 in a horizontal portion of a bracket 43* fixed to the cap piece 7. Manifestly the cover lOthrough the medium of the support 12 may be maintained at various angles ofinclination and may also be maintained in a position at right angles to the top of the mainframe, Figure 9 the latter in order to prevent the top from interfering with the removal and placing of panels in the sides of the main frame after the manner before described. It will also be noted that when the cover is maintained in an upright position at right angles to the top of the main frame, the toe 42* of the support 12 is adapted to bring up against the underside of the horizontal portion of bracket 13* and thereby prevent the cover from swinging backwardly an appeciable distance beyond the upright position of the cover.
In the present and preferred embodiment of my invention the cabinet is provided with three doors 50, 51 and 52. I would have it understood, however, that within the purview of my invention the cabinet may have one, two or more doors. Each of the doors alluded to comprises a frame 53 with a front opening 5 1: and a top opening l lach door also comprises a pane of transparent glas 513 and a removable panel 57 back of the glass 56 and rovided with a hand grasp 58 at its upper end. The top opening of the door is provided with an offset portion as illustrated and is designed to be normally closed by a cap 60, the said cap 60 being removably arranged in the said top opening 55 and being provided with a recess 61 for the reception of the fingers of an operator when it is desired to remove the cap. The panel 57 is designed to bear a picture or ornamental design or educational matter, and the invention contemplates the provision of a number of panels with different subjects thereon in connection with each door so that a prospective purchaser may be readily satisfied and so that when the cabinet is employed in the school various educational panels may be used in succession in the door.
Notwithstanding the practical advantages ascribed to my cabinet peculiar in the respects described, it will be readily apparent that the cabinet is simple and inexpensive in construction and is free of delicate parts such as are likely to get out of order after a short period of use.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A cabinet having means to receive and frame and display a panel, in combination with a panel disposed in said means and readily removable therefrom; the said means having an opening in its top for the insertion and removal of a panel, and being equipped with a removable cap arranged in said top opening and also arranged horizontally flush with the top of said means, and the said panel having a hand grasp at its upper end, and the said top opening and cap being provided with lateral offset portions.
2. {lhe combination in a cabinet, of a main frame having upright portions arranged to receive and hold and display removable panels, said portions being open at their top, in combination with panels removably arranged in said portions, and caps removably arranged in said top openings and disposed horizontally flush with the top of the frame, said panels being provided with hand grasps at their upper ends, and the said top openings and removable caps being provided with lateral offset portions to facilitate grasping of the said hand grasps.
3. A cabinet door adapted to receive and hold and display a panel and having a top wpening, in combination with a panel removably arranged in the door and removable through said top opening, and a cap occupying and closing said top opening and arranged horizontally flush with the upper end of the door, the said panel having a hand grasp at its upper end, and the said top opening and cap being provided with lateral offset portions. 7
4. In a cabinet, the combination with a main frame having interior guides to support a receptacle removable through the front of the frame, of a retainer removabl arranged horizontally flush with the top of the frame and having pendent portions arranged to rest in front of said receptacle and also having the said pendent portions keyed to the main frame whereby the retainer can be removed only by upward movement thereof relative to the main frame.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature.
WILLIAM RIMKE.
