Description

Dec. 1, 1936. F. GLUCKSTEIN CAB-INET CLOSURE AND TABLE Filed sept. 12, 19:55
-llm ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 1, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application September 12, 1935, Serial No. 40,212 In Great Britain September 22, 1934 2 Claims.
This invention relates to containers or housings for rst aid or small household emergency repair articles or other equipment and has for its objects to render first aid readily accessible and easy of manipulation at all times.
In order to be ready for emergency it is desirable that all instruments, bandages and the like should be instantly available at a fixed position together with a table upon which they can be laid out and it is equally desirable that when not in use such equipment should be housed out of sight and away from all dirt and impure atmosphere.
According to my invention I provide a housing or compartment for containing first aid or small household emergency repair articles closed by a door hinged horizontally to the front of the roof of the compartment said door consisting of horizontally hinged foldable members adapted to be opened out to a horizontal plane and supported by brackets hinged within the compartment and adapted to be swung outwardly into operative, table supporting position.
When the housing or compartment is to contain first aid equipment the latter may be housed in a container of special construction which forms the subject matter of my copending application Serial No. 72,017, led April l, 1936.
In order that the invention may be understood reference is hereby made to the accompanying drawing which shows my invention applied t0 motor vehicles.
In this drawing Fig. l is a perspective View of the partition between the drivers seat and the interior of the Vehicle, Fig. 2 is a vertical side sectional view showing the compartment closed, Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the compartment open, with the door of the compartment arranged as a table, Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken `on line 4-4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a similar view to Fig. 3 showing how the compartment may be arranged in the back panel of a seat,.
Referring to this drawing, throughout which like letters of reference indicate like parts whenever occurring, the letter A designates a recess in a panel or wall to the front of the roof of which is hinged a door. This door is constructed of two parts B and B1 foldably hinged together at C, the member B being hinged at C1 to the panel or wall as before indicated. In the open position the two parts B and B1 constituting the door are arranged in horizontal position as shown in Fig. 1 and in this position are supported by brackets D hinged within the compartment, one at each side. The position these brackets occupy when not in use is indicated in Fig. 2, as also is the position occupied by the members B and Bl of the door. The compartment itself can be provided with tments,
such as the clips E, for holding a bottle or bottles or special instruments, but in general the usual first aid equipment Will be contained in a separate removable box indicated at F in Fig. 5.
The letters K and G indicate further compartments in Fig. 1 which may be provided closed by horizontally hinged doors, but it will usually be found unnecessary to provide more than one of the special constructions necessary to enable the closing door tobe used as a table. In Fig. 5 only one hinged member B is provided, the compartment being formed in the interior of a seat M.
By means of my invention the position of the equipment is always constant and a table of adequate size is always available at the most convenient selected position and when not required for use nothing is Visible except the exposed member of the door which will be decorated to conform to its surroundings.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. A built-in cabinet having fixed top, bottom, rear and side walls, a front closure wall hinged horizontally to the front of the top wall, an eX- tension panel hinged horizontally to the bottom edge of said closure and adapted to fold inwardly and be superimposed upon the back of said closure wall when said cabinet is closed, said closure wall and said panel being adapted to be swung outwardly about their hinges to form a horizontal table constituted by the closure wall and the eX- tension panel, supporting brackets hinged vertically within the cabinet, one on either side and adapted to be swung about vertical hinges to positions supporting the table constitutedby the front closure and its extension panel.
2. A built-in cabinet having fixed top, bottom, rear and side walls, a front closure wall hinged horizontally to the front of the top wall, an extension panel hinged horizontally to the bottom edge of said closure and adapted to fold inwardly and be superimposed upon the back of said closure wall when said cabinet is closed, said closure wall and said panel being adapted to be swung outwardly about their hinges to form a horizontal table constituted by the closure wall and the extension panel, supporting brackets hinged vertically within the cabinet, one on either side and adapted to be swung about vertical hinges to posii tions supporting the table constituted by the front
