Description
M. A. NAIRN July 7, 1964 CABINET Filed Dec. 21, 1961 1 1 u l 1 l 1 l l I x| MARK A. NA/RN United States Patent 3,140,134 CABINET Mark A. Nairn, 981 E. 19th St, Hialeah, Fla. Filed Dec. 21, 1961, Ser. No. 161,049 2 Claims. (Cl. 312-204) This invention relates to cabinets; and, more particularly, this invention relates to a bathroom medicine cabinet with a hinged door which, in itself, comprises a forward or front shelved cabinet as Well as a door giving access thereto, and which also comprises a closure for a second or rearward shelved cabinet.
In the past, standard bathroom wall cabinets have been provided with a single shelved closure provided with shelves and adapted to receive numerous articles falling generally into hygienic and medical categories. Because by the nature of things guests often require the use of bathroom facilities, certain more gentle people have at times been embarrassed since objects which they con-- sider to be personal are readily displayed to inquisitive eyes. In addition, it is Well known that certain medicinal products having poisonous qualities are often kept in medicine cabinets, presenting a constant fear and a hazard in that small children may obtain access thereto.
The present invention contemplates a standard medicine cabinet provided with a hingedly mounted cabinet which is recessed behind a forward conventional medicine cabinet and locking means to restrict access to said recessed cabinet.
It is, accordingly, an object of this invention to provide a medicine cabinet provided with a hinged door wherein the hinged door serves a dual function, that of a forward or front shelved cabinet and, secondly, a hinged door through which access may be made to a closure for a second or rearward shelved cabinet in which articles of the aforesaid two categories may be privately and safely stored.
It is another object of this invention to provide a medicine cabinet of the type described which is provided with a locking means whereby the forward shelved cabinet may be maintained in locked relation with the rearward shelved cabinet, whereby access may not be obtained to the rearward shelved cabinet unless the locking means is operated by a key or other suitable means.
It is also another object of this invention to provide an increased and a novel utilization of the available depth of wall space between the wall partitions of bathrooms by an increase of the depth of the instant device in relation to the standard medicine cabinet in the manner described herein.
It is a general object of this invention to provide a device of the type described hereinbefore whch is strong and durable, of simple and practicable construction, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise Well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
In accordance with these and other objects, it will become apparent hereinafter that the instant invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment therefor.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a pictorial view of a bathroom cabinet which is closed;
FIG. 2 is a pictorial drawing of a bathroom medicine cabinet having the door thereof opened; and
FIG. 3 is a pictorial drawing of the front shelved medicine cabinet portion beng opened and illustrating the rear shelved cabinet housed within a recess in the wall section.
Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views and referring fice particularly to FIG. 1, 11 designates generally a medicine cabinet disposed in a recess 12 in a bathroom scene typical of those encountered in the ordinary home. Referring to FIG. 3, it will be seen that the medicine cabinet comprises three major portions, a hinged door 13, a forward shelved cabinet 18 hingedly mounted as at 19, and a rearward shelved cabinet 21. The door 13 of the cabinet is provided with hinge mountings 15 whereby it is adapted to be opened as shown in FIG. 2. The door 13 is provided with an engaging means 14 for engagement of a corresponding receiving means 16 of the cabinet for maintaining the door 13 in a normally closed relation therewith. Disposed on the door 13 and in operable relation with the forward shelved cabinet 18 is a limiting device 17 restraining full opening of the cabinet door 13. The forward shelved cabinet 18 is mounted to the rearward shelved cabinet 21 by hinged means 19, said formed shelved cabinet serving as a door which provides access to said rearward shelved cabinet 21. A locking means 22 is provided on the lower edge 23 of the forward shelved cabinet, and on the lip 24 of the rearward shelved cabinet a corresponding portion 26 of the locking means is provided. The shelved arrangement in the rearward cabinet 21 is adapted to receive a hot water bottle or other devices of similar geometrical arrangement by means of a vertically disposed shelf 27. It will be noted that the shelves of the rearward cabinet 27, 23, 29 and 31 project outwardly from the rearward wall 32 a sufficient distance to define a chamber for receiving articles, but not so far that length projecting thereof will be coincident with the projection of the side wall 33, thereby forming a pocket space for receiving, and nesting the forward shelved cabinet in a fashion such that the wall portion of the forward shelved cabinet designated 36 in a normally abutting relation with the leading edges 37 of the shelves in the rearward cabinet.
In use, the forward shelved cabinet is used in the same manner as a conventional bathroom cabinet; however, the rearward shelved cabinet provides a chamber for storing articles falling into the categories described here inbefore. The access to the rearward shelved cabinet may be restricted by use of the locking means.
While the instant invention has been shown and described in order for it to be considered a most practicable embodiment, it is recognized that departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the invention, which is, therefore, not to be limited to the details disclosed herein, but is to be awarded the full scope of the claims so as to embrace any and all equivalent apparatus and articles.
I claim:
1. In a storage cabinet adapted to be set within a recess in a wall of a building, a first vertical back wall and first top, bottom and side walls secured to and extending forwardly from the respective edges of said first back wall to form a first forwardly-open parallelepipedal receptacle, a first flange integral and coplanar with the forward edges of the top, bottom and side walls of said first receptacle, a second vertical back wall and second top, bottom and side walls secured to and extending forwardly from the respective edges of said second back Wall to form a second, forwardly-open parallelepipedal receptacle of lesser horizontal dimension than said first receptacle and sized to fit therewithin, a second fiange integral with and extending continuously about the forward edges of the top, bottom and side walls of said second receptacle, a first hinge interconnecting two corresponding vertical edges of said flanges to mount said second receptacle for pivoting about a first vertical axis, from a first closed positon nested within and closing and concealing said first receptacle, to a second open position exposing said first receptacle, a door sized to cover and conceal both said receptacles, a second hinge interconnecting said door at one side edge thereof with said second flange at the side opposite said first axis, and mounting said door for pivoting about a second vertical axis, from a first position over and concealing both said receptacles, to a second position exposing said second receptacle only, and cooperating locking means carried by the forward portions of said first and second bottom walls, and operable to lock said second receptacle in its said first position nested Within said first receptacle.
2. The cabinet of claim 1, and first and second sets of horizontal shelves mounted in said first and second re- A}, ceptacles, respectively, in vertically-spaced parallel relation.
