This invention relates to ratchet tools and has for its object the provision of means designedto give the tool a ratcheting movement. o
Various other uses of my .improvement will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. Y i r In the accompanyingdrawings, which 1llustrate my invention, Figure l is a plan view of the tool, with cheek plate removed,
showing my invention in operative positiony when close v y Figure 2 is a planview, with cheek plate removed, showing the ratchet mechanism open.' i Y i Figure 3l isaJ plan View of the polygonally shaped ratchet member.
Figure 4 isa side view of Figure 8.
` Figure 5 is a sectional view of the tool showing the pivot rivet and the llmiting in. p 'Figure 6 is a plan view, with cheek plate removed showing another method'pof adaptation el the principle involved.
Figure 7 is a plan viewof a cheek plate. l refers to the handle, which is ivotall mounted on the pivot rivet 8 in' tie' chee plates 2:2". The handle is manually biased and closed, being' limited in it-stravel by the limiting in 8" in the cheek plates and through tie instrumentalit' of `an arcuateshaped or other suit-ably si'aped` opening 7 located in the handle. The polygonally shaped ratchet member 3 is provided with integral cylindrical shaped shoulder portions 4:4 and provided with polygonally1 shaped or. other summe shaped generation 5 throu h it for adaptation to lt's, nuts7 tools an the like.
The portion 6 ofthe handle, it will be observed, is normally out of thev ath of the polygonally shaped ratchet mem er, allow; ing the handle to be brought lnto engage-y ment with the ratchet member asshown in Figure l. 9 refers to the hole or bore in the cheek plate adapted to take the shoulder portion of the ratchet member 3,
In practice, a bol-t, nut or tool having a portion corresponding in size to the polygonally shaped or other suitable shaped perforation 5, is inserted in said erforation. The method of rotating' the ratc et member 3 is as follows: when the handle 1 is in the closed position a twisting strain can be eX- erted upon the tool, when manually biased the cheek plates with the handle mounted therein are free to turn on the ratchet member, when desired position of handle is located the handle is closed the straight end on the handle encountering one of the sides on the polygonally shaped portion of the ratchet member thus alternately holdingr and releasing the ratchet member. These operations are repeated at will until desired rotation is obtained. l/Vllen it is desired to reverse the direction of rotation the tool is turned upside down on the object, because the direction of the travel of the handleis limited to one direction. This arrangement prevents Wearing away the ratchet member and also the handle, a common defect with the ordinary typeof ratchet tool mechanism.
Various changes maybe made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I byLetters Patent, is o i 1. ratchet tool comprising two cheek plates stayed apart each piovlded with a bore for mounting a ratchet member there in and each also provided with perforations for 'a pivot rivet and a limiting f in, said ratchet member having a poly onal y shaped perforation through it and a so having cylindrically shaped shoulder portions and also a polygonally shaped integral intermediate ratchet portion, and being means of a handle pivotally mounted on the pivotrivet iixedly mounted in the 'cheek plates and having its travel limited by the limitingv pin, the said handle having a straight end portion to coact with a side of the ratchet member also having a concaved portion to provide means for the passage of t e corners on the intermediate portion of the ratchet member, the said handle also having an arcuate-shaped opening in it o eratively associated with the limiting pill which is also fixedly mounted in vthe cheek plates and interposed between the ratchet member and the pivot rivet, the said cheek plates, ratchet member and handle being heldin assembled "osition by riveting the claim as new and desire to secure rotated by 'pivot rivet and the imiting pm in the cheek i plates.
2. A ratchet tool comprising two cheek plates stayed apart each provided with a bore for mounting a ratchet member therein and each also provided with perforations for a pivot rivet and a limiting pin, said member having a polygonal perforation through it and also having cylindrically shaped shoulder portions and also a polygonally shaped .said cheek-plates,
" tion of the ratchet member, said handle also having an arcuate shaped opent-1f in it operatively associatedy with the limitino' nin which is also tixedly mounted in the cheek plates, the pivot rivet interposed between "etchet member and the limiting pin,
ratchet member and handie being held in assembled position byriveting the pivot rivet and limiting pin in the cheek plates.
