This invention relates to a Wrench or operating device for a tool, and is designed primarily for use With a tool, such as a tube cutter, tube expander or the like, having a part, such as a feeding device, Which is movable with' relation thereto. In a tube cutter, for example', the tool as a Whole isrotated to effect the cutting operation an-d between the rotatory or cutting movements the feeding device is actuated to advance the cutter, a Wrench or operating device being connected With the tool in such a manner that When itis moved in one direction it will rotate the tool as a Whole and when' moved in the other direction Will actuate the feeding device.
One object of the present invention is to provide such a Wrench which can be used either for the operation of a tool of the kind set forth or with other devices to be operated, such as a nut.
A further'obj ect of the invention is to provide such ajvvrench having apart or pin whichmay be mcved into a positionto actuate the feeding device or like part of the tool or may be moved into a position alongside of the Wrench Where it will be out of the Way and Will not interfere With the application of the Wrench to other devices.

'To this end the socket member is rotatably supported at one end in the body of this Wrench and is rotatably supported at its other end in a cover plate 18, which is removably'attached tothebody portion of the Wrench by suitable fastening devices, such as screws 19. A one Way clutch is interposed between the lever or .body portion of the Wrench and the socket member for causing the socket member to rotate with the body portion when the latter is moved in v`one di'- rection and permitting the body portion to move in the other direction with relation to said ysocket member. In the present construction, this clutch comprises ratchet teeth formed integral with the socket member and a spring pressed pawl 2O carried by the body portion 16. The body portion of the wrench has attach-ed thereto a handle 21 for operating the same and this handle is removable therefrom so that other handles of different lengths may be substituted therefor. In the present instance, the handle is connected with the body portion ofthe wrench by a screw coupling 22.
Mounted on the body portion of the wrench is an elongated projection or pin 23 adapted to enter the slotted portion 15 of the handle 14 of the feeding device and thus rotate the nut 13. In the present instance, the nut 13 and stem 12 are provided with left hand threads, the ,arrangement being such that when the Wrench is moved in one direction the socket member, tool and nut will rotate together but when the body portion of the wrench is moved in the other direction the socket member and tool will remain stationary and the nut will be rotated, thus imparting a longitudinal movement to the stem 12 and expanding device 11. In order that the wrench may be applied Y to devices to be operated which do not embody a feeding' device, such as a nut, without interference by the projection or pin 23, this pin is so mounted that it can be folded into a position alongside of the wrench where it will be out of the way. lPreferably the pin is pivotally mounted between two radially extending parts of the body portion of the wrench, which parts engageV the sides of the pin and brace the same i'irmly against lateral displacement without interfering with the movement of the pin about its axis. In the present construction the body portion of the wrench is provided in one face hereof with an elongated radial recess 24 and the inner portion of Vthe pin fits snugly within said recess and has its sides flattened to bear against the flat side walls of the recess` which constitute the radial parts of the body portion of the wrench. The
Y Y pin or projection 23 is secured in the recess by Cil a pivot pin 25 rigidly secured thereto and the pin is adapted to be inserted through a transverse recess 26 formed in the body portion of the wrench and intersecting the radial recess 24, the end of the recess 26 being closed by the cover plate 18. The Walls of the recess 26 are provided with grooves 27 to receive the pivot pin .25 and permit the pin to be inserted in the wrench. The radial recess 24; is of a length j slightly greater than the length of the pin so that when the latter is folded into the recess the end of the pin may be engaged by the iinger of the operator or by a tool to move the saine outwardly about its axis.
' The pin 23 is acted upon by a yieldable detent to hold the same either in its extended position or in its folded position and, as here shown, the pin has at its inner end and at one `the recess 26 is a plunger 28 which is acted upon by a spring 29 and has a flat face adapted to engage either of the flat surfaces'on the inner portion of the pin and thus retain the pin in the position to which it has been moved until suicient force is applied thereto to'overcomethe pressure of the spring 29 While I have shown and described one embodiment of my .invention I wish it tobe understood that I do not desire to be limited to the details thereof as various modifications may occur to a person skilled inthe art.
I-Iaving now fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a wrench of the character described, comprising a body portion movable abouta transverse axis, a socket member rotatably mounted in said body portion and adapted to receive the shank of a tool, and means to cause said socket member to rotate with said body portion when the latter is moved in one direction and to permit said body portion to rotate with relation to said socket member when it is rotated in the other direction, said body portion having a radial recess in Vone face thereof, a pin having one end pivotally mounted in said recess and adapted either to lie within said recess or to extend outwardly beyond said body portion and substantially parallel with said axis.
2. In a wrench of the character described,
comprising a body portion movable about body portion when the latter is moved in one directionand to permit said body portion to rotate with relation to said socket member when it is rotated in the other direction, said j body portion havinga radial recess in one face thereof, a pin having one kend pivotal'ly mounted in said recess and adapted either to lie within said recess or to extend outwardly beyond said body portion and substantially parallel with the axis thereof, and a spring pressed detent mounted in said body portion and acting on the inner end of said pin to yieldably retain the same in either of said positions. j
3. In a wrench of the character described, comprising a body portion, a socket Vmember rotatably mounted in said body portion and adapted to receive the shank of a tool, and
means to cause said socket member to rotate with said body portion when the latter Vis moved 1n one direction and to permit said body portion to rotate with relationA to saidY radial recess in one face thereofapin having one end pivotally mounted in said recess and adapted either to lie within said recess or to extend outwardly from said body portion, said body portion also having a second re- .cess opening into said radial recess, and a.
spring pressed detent mounted in said second recess and acting on said pin to yieldably retain the same in either of said positions.
4. In a wrench of the character described, comprising a body portion, a socket member rotatably mounted in said body portion and adapted to receive the shank of a tool, and means to cause said socket member to rotate with said body portion when the latter is moved in one direction and to permit said body portion to rotate with relation to said socket member when it is rotated in the other direction, said body portion having a radial recess in one face thereof, a pin having one end pivotally mounted in said recess and adapted either to lie within said recess or to extend outwardly from said body portion, said body portion also having a transverse recess opening into said radial recess and provided in its side walls with grooves extending lengthwise thereof, said pin being adapted to be inserted through said second recess and having a pivot pin the ends of which extend beyond the sides of the first mentioned pin and are adapted to enter said grooves when said first mentioned pin is 1nsertedin said body portion. f
5. In a wrench of the character described, comprising a body portion, a socket member rotatably mounted in said body portion and adapted to receive the shank of a tool, and means to cause said socket member to rotate with said body portion when the latter is moved in one direction and to permit said body portion to rotate with relation to said socket member when it is rotated in the other direction, said body portion having a radial recess in one face thereof, a pin having one end pivotally mounted in said recess and 1 adapted either to lie within said recess or to extend outwardly from said body portion, said body portion also having a transverse recess opening into said radial recess and provided in its side walls with grooves extending lengthwise thereof, said pin being adapted to be inserted through said second recess and having a pivot pin the ends of which extend beyond the sides of the first mentioned pin and are adapted to enter said grooves when said first mentioned pin is inserted in said body portion, a closure for said second recess, a plunger mounted in said and adapted to receive the shank of said tool, and a one-way clutch interposed between said lever and said socket member, a pin pivotally mounted on said lever for movement into a position adjacent tov and extending lengthwise of said lever or into a position extending transversely to said lever and beyond one side thereof, to operate a device forming a part of said tool and movable with relation to the shank of said tool.
7 A wrench for imparting a rotatory movement to a rotatable tool and comprising a lever extending substantially radially from said tool, a socket member rotatably mounted in said lever near one end thereof and adapted to receive the shank of said tool, and a one-way clutch interposed between said lever and said socket member, said lever having parts extending lengthwise thereof and spaced one from the other, a pin pivotally mounted between said parts, braced thereby against lateral displacement and adapted to be moved to a position in which it will ex-` tend transversely to and beyond one side of said lever, tooperate a device forming part of said tool, or to be folded into a position extending lengthwise of said lever and adjacent thereto. 8. A wrench for imparting a rotator movement to a rotatable tool and comprising a lever extending substantially radially from said tool, a socket member rotatably mounted in said lever near one end thereof and adapted to receive theshank of said tool, and a one-way clutch interposed between said lever and said socket member, a pin pivotally mounted on said lever for movement into a position adjacent to and extending lengthwise of said lever or into a position extending transversely to said lever and beyond one side thereof, to operate a device forming part of said tool and movable with relation to the shank of said tool, and a yielda-ble device carried by said lever and acting on said pin to retain the same in either of said positions.
