Application.;. fi1ed: 0ntoher;18; 19121 Santana-7263760. Renewed October 1;, 1913: se1lia1 Rnn798,8Y-5h To all'whoin t'mayconcems'-:
Be itknown-that 1;; FRAN'IG' Mossenno, acitizenof the United States, residingat Attleboro, in the-countyof Bristol -and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful'Improvements in --Wrenches,- of which the following is, a-specificatiom v My invention. relates to ratchet-wrenches and has for its primary objects the-provie sion of a body capable oficonstructionatfa minimum expense, andadapted' to inc-lose the operative parts to make it possibleto reverse the. direction of travel, of the ratchet head; and to provide a reversal mechanism convenient to operate,
The invention accordingly consists in the features of' construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of-partswhich will be eXemplifi'edin-th'e construction here inafter set forth; andthe. scope of 'the ap} plication of which will be indicated-inthe appended claims.
In, the accompanying; drawings which form a part of'this spec'ification,--Figures l and 2 are front and side. elevations respectively of a ratchet wrench embodyingmy invention, part of the handlebeing broken away, Fig. 3, a view similar to that-ofFigt 1, but showing -aportion of; the: front plate broken away, Figs. l, 5 and 6, sections on lines w w, w a" and y y respectively ofFig. 1, and Fig. 7, a section on line a z of Fig. 3.-
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
My wrench is composed of a broad tapering head portion A and a narrow handle portion B, the whole consisting of a front plate C and a back plate D similar to each other in all respects, provided respectively with inwardly directed marginal flange portions 0 and a; transversely disposed depressed portions in the head, d and d; and longitudinally disposed depressed portions, 6 and e, in the handle. The plates C and D are also provided in their head portions respectively with circular openings f and f adjacent rectangular perforations g and g; transverse openings h and h in the transverse depressions; and perforations 7c and lo respectively in the handle portion. In the head portion of said plates are respectively provided perforations Z and Z to receive rivets m. Rivets a in perforations 7c and 70 also assist the first mentioned rivets in holding the edges of the flanges 0 and 0 in contact; 'and the combined plates- Will be seen to hie-hollowand-'form-a complete housplates -G and D Y are made of" comparatively thin metal capable ofbeingbentf or de-' pressed with comparative ease withsuitable tools, thusavoidingythe expense-of material, ,labor infinishing, jand excessive weight inherent inwrenches 'whose" bodies are of solid material A cylindrical-ratchet head or body 0 is provided with a central angular opening 0, andan annular series of peripheral teeth 0 midway its front and rear faces. This head turns loosely in the openings f, f of the head'portion A andis secure. against de:
taehment by the sidefaces of the teeth'which slidably bearz'against..t-he inner faces of" the front-and 'back pl'ates'G and D." The opening- 0 of' th'e' ratchet-head isv particularly adapted to receive the reduced; squared end pof 'a removable socket P. It willibe understood that the bodies of'these sockets P are of varying sizes, while theirshank's onends p are substantiallyuniform in size.
To facilitate the retention o f"the socket end, particularly in case of slight variations -.of dimensions,'the head 0 is recessed longitudinally the opening -0 8 81 at Q, and in its-adjacent front and rear sides, as at g, and a fiat spring 9' applied to the recess Q; the
ends g ofrthe spring being bent at substantially right angles to the spring. These ends form ears provided with teats 9 adapted to enter the recesses q whereby the spring is assisted in retaining its position relatively to the slot or recess Q. "The spring normally extending outwardly from the surface of the head 0 to frictionally engagethe end of the socket; Adjacentithe head 0 is a pin R whose squared reduced ends renter the openings g and g of the plates of the head, and upon this pin is pivotally mounted a pawl S provided upon its rear withtwo interspaced shoulders s and upon its forward margin with twointerspaced teeth 8' adapted to alternately register intermediate the teeth o when the pawl is rocked. In broke'n lines is shown a second position of the pawl as rocked.
In the portion of the head adjacent the handle is located transversely a plate T whose reduced ends t enter openings t and t in the plates C and D respectively. This Passing loosely through the'opening if is a shank portion u of a lever U having an enlarged head to provided with a pointedend u. A spring a surrounds the shank u and has one end bearing against the plate T and its other end against the head u" of the lever. The portion u of the lever is provided with a longitudinal slot uh Washers 11 are located at each side of the head. A pin V passes loosely through the washers and the openings k h and a and has upon its opposite ends knurled heads '0, so that by the thumb and finger the lever U may be transversely vibrated from the position shown in full linesvin Fig. 2 to the position shownin broken lines therein, thus reserving the relative position of the teeth 8' with relation to the teeth 0 on the ratchet head.-.
It will be observed that by vibrating the handle one of the teeth 8 will engage and rotate the-ratchet head in one direction only,
while when the other tooth s of the pawl has been shifted into contact with the ratchet teeth by means of the lever U the ratchet head Wlll be impelled in the opposite direction at each reciprocation of the handle. It will be further observed that all the operating parts are inclosed Within the housing formed by the plates C and D and their respective flanges, and that the assemblage of the parts is firm, simple, and free from the use of solder, and that the resulting structure is comparatively light.
I claim 1. In a ratchet wrench, a head portion having a rigid handle, a ratchethead rotatably mounted in hearings in said head portion and having socket opening and pe ripheral teeth, a pawl pivotally mounted in the head portion for rocking movement and having interspaced shoulders, a bodily movable lever having a longitudinal slot, a spring around the shank of said lever, a guide for said shank against which said spring has a bearing, the head portion bein provided with transverse openings an transverse depressed portions thereto and a pin passed loosely t rough said 0 enings and through the longitudinal slot 0 the lever and having heads dis osed in said depressions for transversely v1 rating said lever.
2. In a ratchet wrench, a head portion having a rigid handle, a ratchet head rotatably mounted in bearings in said head portion and having socket opening and peripheral teeth, a pawl pivotally mounted in the head portion for rocking movement and having interspaced shoulders, a bodily movable lever having a longitudinal slot, a spring around the shank of said lever, a guide for said shankagainst which said spring has a bearing, the head portion being provided with transverse openings and a pin passed loosely throu h said openings and through the longitu inal slot of the lever, and washers on said pin upon opposite sides of said lever. V
In testimony whereof Ihave afiixed, my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. FRANK MOSSBERG.
