. The invention relates generally to tools.
for performing punching, riveting or similar operations, and more particularly it'r'e-- lates to a manually operab e tool of the character illustrated and described in my 'copending application Serial No. 508,250, filed January 12, 1931.
Such tools usually embody relatively movablejaws carrying opposed dies thereon, tolo gether with a pair of handles movable with relation to each other to open and close the jaws;' and the primary object of the inven tion is to provide a new and improved tool 'of this character having a jaw structure l5 which may be rotated with relation to the operating handles and embodying powerful jaw-actuating means operatedby the handles and related to the other elements of the 'tool in such afmanner as to insure against loss of power due to binding of the parts.
Another object-of the invention is to provide a tool of this character wherein the' parts are rugged and of sim 1e form adapted to be economically manu aetured. i5 Another object is to provide a tool of this kind embodying a. novel mounting for the.

In the form chosen for disclosure herein, the invention is embodied in a tool having an elongated two-part body 10, one part 11 of which carries a pair of relatively movable jaws 12 and 13 while the other part 14 of the at all times upon the longitudinal center line of the body 10 and the two parts 11 and 14 of the body are connected for relative rota- T member 16. Such a pivoted connection for body carries a pair of relatively movable handles 15 for operating the two jaws. Both the handles-15 and the jaws 12 and. 13 have a scissors-like movement so as to be centered tion about the longitudinal axis ofthe body whereby to permit shifting of the plane of movement of the handles with relation to the plane of movement of the jaws.

The part 11 of the body-10 is pre ferabl of flat plate like form having a transverse end member 16, with two transversely spaced side members 17 extending therefrom to ward and connected to the part 14 of the body. The jaws l2 and 13- are preferably of similar. elongated form and are pivoted intermediate their ends on the transverse end 70' each of the jaws is provided by spaced lugs 18 formed on each jaw so as to project into embracing relation to the member 16 and connected thereto by a bolt 19 extending through the lugs. 18 and the member 16. When thus mounted, corresponding ends of the jaws 12 and 13 extend beyond the member- 16 of the body and upon these ends complemental opposed dies 20 and 21 are mounted. v
The other ends of the jaws 12 and 13 extend along the side members 17 of the body part 11 and for the purpose of actuating the jaws, these ends are engaged by toggle means formed by two pairs of links 22 acting therebetween. As shown in Fig. 3, each jaw has. the links 22 of one pair positioned on opposite sides thereof-and pivotally connected thereto by a bolt 23 extending through the jaw and the two links. From their connecting bolts 23 the links22 extend toward each other along opposite sides of the side members 17, and the a'dja cent ends of the links are pivotally connected to each other by a short cylindrical pressure member 24 positioned in the space between the side members 17.- The pressure member 24 has two of the links 22 overlying each other at each end-of the member, and bolts 25 extending through the links serve to pivotally connect the same to the pressure member and thereby provide the central pivot of the toggle.
The jaws of the tool are opened and closed by means of a plunger 26 which is preferably located on the central axis of the body 10 for longitudinal movement so as to actuate the pressure member 24 and thereby operate the toggle formed by the links 22. To provide a bearing for the plunger 26, the body part 14 is of sleeve-like form so that the plunger 26 may extend therethrough as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The bod part 14 is provided with end flanges 2; as shown in Fig. 2 between which a split collar formed on the body part 11 is positioned so as to provide for relative rotation of the two parts of the body. The split collar is in the present case formed by an offset arcuate portion 28 connecting the ends of the side members 17, and an arouate cap plate29 held in place by bolts 30.
In View of the rotative relation of the -two parts 11 and 14 of the body,the plunger 26 is connected to the pressure member 24 so as ,to permit relative rotation of these two parts, and for this purpose the end of the plunger 26 extends into a socket 31 formed loosely against the pressure'member 24' so as to perinit the desired rotation of the parts.
ciprocated, the handles 15 are connected to the body part 14 and to the plunger 26 so that each handle operates with a toggle-acends to their handle 15 by a bolt 36 spaced from the pivot 33, the links 35 being similarlyposltioned on opposite sides of the handles. The other ends of the links 35 are positioned on opposite sides of a head 37 formed on the body part 14 and each pair of links is pivoted to the head by a bolt 38. Thus each handle 15 and the associated links 35 constitute a toggle as will be evident from a comparison of Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. These toggles and the toggle formed by the links 22 approach their most effective positions at the same time so as to insure effective operation of the tool.
To limit the closing movement of the jaws,
.a collar 39 is threaded on the plunger 26 adjacent to the cross bar 34 so as to engage the head 37 in the closing movement of In order that the plunger 26 may be reoperation whereby to compensate for thearcuate movement-of the jaws and insure a smooth, accurately formed deformation or out. To provide such a floating mounting the die 21 has a head 21 overlying the inside surface of the jaw 13 with a stem 41 fitting loosely into a bore 42 which is somewhat larger than the stem 41. The stem is held in place by a single set screw 43 fitting loosely in an annular groove 44 formed in the stem 41. Owing to the looseness of the mounting, the end of its head 21 is adaptedfor some degree of lateral shifting. The die 20 has a stem 20 fitting snugly into a bore 20 in the jaw 12 a'hdsecured therein by a screw 45 so as to provide a fixed mounting for the die 20.
From the foregoing it. will be apparent that the invention provides a tool wherein the dies, and handles are at all times symmetrirally located with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tool. Moreover, the tool is so constructed that the powerful actuating force of the toggles associated with the handles is transmitted to the jaws without loss due to binding of the parts. The parts of the device are inherently rugged, and are of simple form whereby to facilitate and reduce the cost of manufacture of the device. By reason of the rotative relation of the operating structure and the jaw structure the device is rendered suitable for many types of work, and this fact taken in connection with the powerful character of the actuating means, causes the tool to have a wide range of usefulness.
The floating mounting of one of the dies is also of marked advantage since it produces smoothly and accurately formed work, even though the jaws and dies move along arcuate paths.
I claim as my invention:
11 A-tool of the character, described comprising a body having two rotatably con nected parts, a plunger movable longitudinally along the axis of rotation of said parts, a pair of jaws mounted on one of said parts and a pair of handles mounted on the other of said parts, said jaws being movably mounted in opposed relation, a toggle acting between said jaws and having a central pivot lying on said axis, means forming a rotatable pressure transmitting connection between one end of said plunger and the pivot oi Said toggle, and means forming a responding ends of the toggle connection between each of said handles and said plunger.
2. A tool of the character described comprising abody having two rotatably connected parts, an element movable longitudinally along the axis of rotation of said parts, a pair of jaws mounted on one of said parts and a pair of handles mounted on the other of said parts, a toggle acting between said jaws and having a central pivot lying on said axis, means forming a rotatable pressure transmitting connection between one end of said element and the pivot of said toggle, and means forming an operating connection between said handles and said element.

A tool of the character described comprising a body, a pair of handles and a pa1r of jaws pivotally mounted on opposite ends of said body, each being arranged to have scissors-like opening and closing movement centered on a common axis, and three toggles acting to multiply the power exerted on said handles to operate said aws, said toggles being arranged to approach their most effective positions at the same time, two of said toggles being dis osed symmetrically on opposite sides of sal axis and the other having its central pivot located at all times on said axis.

A tool of the character described com prising an elongated fiat body, a pair of similar jaws pivoted intermediate their ends adjacent one end of said body so that corjaws project beyond .the end of said body, opposed complemental dies on. the projecting ends of said jaws, said body having a pair of spaced side members providlng an elongated space to therebetween extending toward the other end of said body, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said other end of said body between said side members and longitudinally alined with the space between said members, a

A tool of the character described comprising a manually operable actuator having a sleeve-like body, a plunger sl'idable through said sleeve, a pair of handles symmetrically pivoted to one-end of said plunger for movement. in the plane of said plunger, a pair of links pivoted to said sleeve and to said handles at points spaced from said first mentioned pivots whereby to form a double toggle actuator for said plunger, and a jaw vstructure com rising an elongated plate having a split co lar at one end embracing said sleeve to support said plate rotatably on said sleeve in substantially the plane of the axis of said plunger, having an elongated slot formed to which the other end of bemoved, a pair of jaws pivoted intermediate their ends on the other end of said therein insaid plate away from said handles beyond t e end of said plate, two pairs of links, one air being pivoted to the other end of eac of said jaws, and the links of each air projecting along opposite sides of said said through said slot and pivoting said pairsof links together to form a third toggle, and means forming a pressure transmittlng connection between said plunger and said pressure member permittin relative rotation about the axis of said p unger. 7. A tool of the character described comprising a manually operable actuating device having a supporting element, a plunger slidable through said element, a pair of handles operatively connected to said element and to said plunger for reciprocating said plunger, and a jaw structure comprising an elongated plate connected at one end to said element to support said plate on said element in substantially the plane of the axis of said plunger, said plate having an elongated slot formed therein .into which the other end of said plunger may be moved,'a pair of'jaws pivoted intermediate their ends on the other end of said plate and each having one end projecting away from said handles beyond the end of said plate, two pairs of links, one

nected at one end to said body to position said support on said-body substantially symmetrically with relation to the axis of said plunger and to permit relative rotation of said body and said support about said axis, said support being formed to provide two spaced side members between. which the other end of said plunger may be moved, a pair of jaws pivoted intermediate their ends on the other'end of'said support and each having one end projecting away from said handles beyond the end of said support, a toggle having its ends pivoted to the other ends of said jaws and havin a central pivot pro- .viding a pressure mem er positioned in the space between said side members and movable along a path forming a continuation ofthe axis of said plunger, and means forming a pressure transmitting connection between said plunger and said pressure'member for actuating said toggle.
