MANUFACTURING 00., 01? DENVER, COLORADO, A CORPORATION OF COLORADO.
HANDLE FOR TRAVELING BAGS, SUITCASES, ETC.
Application filed September 27, 1926..
This invention relates to a handle to be used on suitcases, traveling bags and the like, and l' as :l'or its principal object the provision of a handle construction which can be cheaply nninuttactured, will eliminate all the sewing and padding necessary on present handles, which will be strong and serviceable, and which will simulate in appearance the present style of sewn and path ded handles.
Another objectis to provide a handle which will not be aiit'ected by inoisture, oils, perspiration, etc, and which will not rip or become misshapen from use.
Other objects and advantages residein the detail construction (it the ll'lVGliilOll, which is (lQSigllGtl for economy, simplicity, and etl'iciency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description out the invention reference is had to the accoinpanying drawing which terms a part. hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughoutthe description.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a suitcase with my improved handle in place thereon.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the handle as used in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross section liu'ougjhthe same, taken on the line 33, Fig. 2.
Fig. i is a, longitudinal section, taken on the longitudinal center line of the handle of F 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an alternate style of handle, known as the round type. i
Fig. 6 is a cross section through the type of Fig. 5, taken on the line 66, Fig. 5.
In 1 a suitcase is illustrated at 10 provided withthe usual handle straps 11 to which the links 12 for a handle 13 are secured. The handle 13 is illustrated in detail in Figs. 2, 3 and L and comprises a metallic tie strip 14 the ends of Which are formed in loops 15 after which they are Serial No. 137,946.
turned baclnrard upon the strip 14;, as at 23. The linlrs 12 are passed through the loops 15 of the tie strip.
The combined tie strip and links are then pieced in a mold and cast into a solid block oi relatively soft rubber 16 which surrounds and conceals the tie strip and its loops 15. The rubber bloclc 1G is preferably formed to simulate a built up leather handle,ithav- .ing projections l'i formed thereon to simulate the seams oi a built up handle.
in Figs. 5 and 6 the invention is illustrated as applied to the usual round type of handle. In this form a tie strip 18 is can ployed. tern'iinating in loops 1th The strip l8 and its loops 15) are embedded in a cast rubber covering;- 20, there being openings 21 molded in the covering to align with the penings in the loops 19 for the reception oi attachment links. The covering 20 is provided with suitable longitudinal indentations 22 to simulate the seams usually found in a round padded leather handle. I
The rubber can be made in differing colors to match the color of the suit use or bag upon which the handle is to be used. Bubber is, or course, in'ipervious to moisture and makes a much more du able handle than the present padded, sewn leather handle.
ll hile a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, itis desired to be understood that the same may be *aried, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I
Having thus described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A handle for suitcases and the like comprising a metallic tie strip terminating in loops; a unitary rubber casing molded around said strip; and links inolded within said cas ng so as to pass through said loops for attaching said handle to said suitcase.
In testimony whereof, I atlix iny signature.
MAURICE B. SFHVAYDER.
