Washing-Machine.
No. 166,460. PatentedAug.10,I 875.
J I v ifiwl n 6 JOSEPH HOLLINGSWORTH, OF J ON ESBOROUGH, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO ELIHU W. PEMBERTON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,460, dated August 10, 1875; application filed July 15,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH HOLLINGS- WORTH,of J onesborough,in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
A is the box or body of the machine which contains the water and the clothes, and rests upon the legs B. The ends A A are inclined, as shown, so as partly to cover the water and prevent it from splashing over. Lugs O are attached to the end A, and support the pivot of a bell-crank lever, D D, the lower end of which is connected by apivot to the connecting-rods E E, which are pivoted to a sliding-box or plunger, F. This plunger is a rectangular tube, within which is suspended a flap-valve, G, bearing against a stop, as shown in Fig. 1, so that it will be closed by the pressure of the water as it is forced forward by the downward movement of the handle,
and opened to permit the plunger to be retracted, passing freely through the water. A series of rods or bars, H H, are attached to projections from the inner face of the end A in such manner as to leave open spaces between them, and also a chamber, I, between the bars and the end to receive the water forced through the clothes with the forward movement of the plunger. A sliding-board, K, is slipped between any two of a series of cleats, L L, fastened to the sides of the box, and held in position by the swinging arm M. The adjustment of this board will be determined by the amount of the clothes in the box, and its object is to prevent the Water from being forced up in a jet by the action of the plunger.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the tubular plunger F, furnished with the valve G and the rods or bars H and water-chamber I, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination, the valved plunger, the bars and water-chamber, and the adjustable partition K, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH HOLLINGSWORTH.
