SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,788, dated June 3, 1884:.

.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE XV. HoLMEs, of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double- Piston Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
My invention relates to an improvement in double-piston pumps, the object of thesame being to provide an improved valve adapted to divide the pump-cylinder into two parts, and act as a head to both; and it consists in the parts and combinations of parts, as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved pump. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section of the same, taken through the cylinder; and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the cylinder.
A represents a pump-stock formed in the usual manner, the lower end thereof being closed for the purpose of preventing the escape of water. This stock is provided near its lower end with the opening a, which latter reg.- isters with a similar opening, I), of the cylinder 0. In deep wells, I prefer to provide the opening a of the stock with a check-valve, D, of any suitable construction, to prevent the water from flowing back into the cylinder; but in comparatively shallow wells this valve is unnecessary, The cylinder 0 is preferably open at both ends, and is provided centrally with a seat, (1, by means of which latter the cylinder is secured to the stock by bolts or any other suitable means. The central portion of this cylinder is preferably square, as shown at e, and the two opposite faces thereof are open, the opening f being for the admission of water to the cylinder, and the opening b for the passage of water from the cylinder to the pump. XVithin this central portion of the cylinder is pivotally secured the valve E, which latter simultaneously opens the supply for one portion of the cylinder and opens the escape for the other. As before stated, the cylinder is open at both ends, and is provided with two pistons, I, one of which moves in the upper half of the cylinder, while the other moves in the lower half, the pistons being separated from each other by the valve E. Each piston J is provided with a rod, J, the outer ends of which are secured to the cross-heads K K, while the outer ends of the latter are connected "to the opposite ends of the guide-rods L. These.
rods rest and move in the guides on, formed integral with the cylinder, and the yoke thus formed is moved by the pitman M, the lower end of which is centrally secured to the upper cross-head, K. The handle N is pivotally secured to the pump-stock, and the upper end of the pitmau is pivotally-secured to the handle, and when the latter is operated the pistons are cause to rise and descend, and conse quently force a continuous stream into the stock, which issues from the spout as fast as supplied.

The combination, with a pump-stock and a pump-cylinder, the latter provided with a discharge-opening and a supply-opening, the said openings being in the same horizontal plane, of a valve pivoted in the cylinder between the said openings and dividing the cylinder into two parts, and adapted to be moved so as to close the supply and open the discharge opening to one portion of the cylinder and open the supply-opening and close the discharge to the other, and suitable pistons above and below the said valve.
