UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
lVILLIAM L. OHIPLEY, OF LA MONTE, MISSOURI.
PUMP..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,523, dated December 27, 1881. Application lled October 12, 1881. (No model.)
` To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. OHIPLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at La Monte, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawin g, and to letters orgures of reference marked thereon, which l'orm a part of this specification.
My invention relates to pumps; and it consists of the construction and arrangement of its several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The accompanying drawing is a longitudinal section.
A is the pump. It consists of a cylinder, B, provided with a reservoir, O, upon its upper end, and a chamber, D, upon its lower or submerged end, in which is placed a valve and strainer, all being arranged substantially as shown.
The reservoir O, which may be of any desired shape, has its lower end tightly secured around the upperportion ot' the cylinder, which projects into it, as shown, for the purpose of relieving the operator of the additional weight of the water in the reservoir.
Upon the top of the cylinder is an opening, to which is fitted the screw-cap o. This screwcap is provided with a small central opening and a stuffing-box, c', through which passes the sucker-rod, as shown.
The reservoir has an outlet, d, situated in its upper side, and an outlet. d', in its lower side. The ends of these outlets have threads c`ut around them, so that caps may be screwed onto either ot them, as desired.
E is the sucker-rod. It has upon its lower end the piston b, in which operates the valve b. Placed around the rod are the caps n. They are upwardly inclined, their lower ends being secured around the rod and their upper and outer ends fitting snugly the sides of the cylinders. They have suitableperforations, a', through which the liquid may readily pass when the pump is in operation.
Motion is transmitted to the rod by any of tion ot' the actuating-lever easier, and in the downstroke of the piston b, they being provided with outlets allow the liquidsto pass through them rapidly.
By the employment of the reservoir-outlets d d the pump can be made either a lifting or a force pump.
The cap can be secured onto the nozzle d', and a hose or pipe can be attached to the nozzle d. The pump can then be putin operation. The air remaining in the cylinder above the outlet of the nozzle will constitute the airchamber, and the Water can be forced through the hose or pipe with a rapidity in proportion to the strength applied to the actuating-lever; or the liquid can be forced out of the nozzle d with the same rapidity by closing the opening of the nozzle d.
This pump is especially adapted for use in bored wells, whereit is desired to secure a rapid and continuous flow of water through a cylinder of small diametel;
What I Claim isl. The funnel-shaped reservoir U, with its lower end tightly secured around D116 cylinder B, and provided with an opening, d, in its upper side and an opening, d', in its lower side, said reservoir heing arranged to operate in combination with the sucker-rod E, its piston b, valve b', and its actuating mechanism.
2. In a lifting and force pump, the combination of the cylinder B, with valve and strainer situated in its lower end, and reservoir C, having au opening iu its top, and provided with outlets d and d', with the sucker-rod E, cups a, piston I), and valve b', and its actuating mechanism, all arranged and operating substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM LEE OHIPLEY.
