PATENTED JAN. 29, 1907. W. M. DIGHT.
WASHING MACHINE. APPLICATION FILED MAR.22. 1905.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 29, 1907.
Application filed March 22, 1905. Serial No. 251,372.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM MILLER DIGIIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My present invention relates to improvements in washing-machines, and has special reference to a device in which a plunger is reciprocated in such a manner as to receive air therein on the upward stroke and pound the clothes and expel the air on the downward stroke, so as to thoroughly cleanse the clothes and agitate the water.
To attain these objects, the invention consists of a novel construction of washing-machine, as will presently appear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view through a receptacle, showing my mechanism in position for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the plunger and operating mechanism removed from the receptacle. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the supporting-plate for the operating mechanism.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the receptacle, which has secured upon the interior thereof near the top, by means of staples 2, the supporting-plate 8, which is provided with openings 4 for the reception of the staples and with a series of curved adjusting lugs or projections 5, which are adapted to receive the lower end 6 of the projecting support 7, which is provided with the bifurcated upper end 8, in which is pivotally mounted the operating lever or handle 9. he inner end of the handle 9 is provided with slot 10, which alines substantially with the center of the receptacle and is adapted to receive the upper end of the pounder-rod 11, which is provided with openings so that any desired adjustment can be had to accommodate the clothes within the receptacle. Carried upon the lower end of this piston-rod is a pounder, which consists of a series of cylinders 13, each one of which are secured tobinding or solder, and are provided with the closed tops 14 and the open bottoms 15. By this construction it will be seen that as the lever 9 is reciprocated the pounder is also reciprocated within the receptacle and that upon each upward stroke a certain amount of air is drawn within the cylinders and when the cylinders are forced downward the air is expelled simultaneously with the pounding of the clothes, thus insuring a double action upon the clothes, so as to thoroughly cleanse the same.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that I provide a washing-machine of this character which is in its embodiment simple, durable, and inexpensive and which is a thoroughly efficient and practical device.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a washing-machine, the combination of a receptacle, a supporting-plate secured within the receptacle near the top thereof, said supporting-plate being provided wit-h a series of curved adj usting-lugs providing spaces therebetween, a vertical support provided with a projecting lug adapted to fitin the spaces between the projecting lugs to hold otally secured to the upper end of said vertical support, a pounder-rod adjustably secured to said lever intermediate of its length and projecting into the receptacle, and a pounder carried by the lower end of said rod, said pounder consisting of a series of cylinders provided with open bottoms.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
