CARL S. JOHNSONtOF BUTTE, MONTANA.

Application filcd nugust 31, 1927. Serial No. 216,741.
This invention relates to bathtubs and more particularly to a cover adapted to be applied to a bathtub ofa conventional construction.
One object of the invention is to provide a cover which may be hingedlyconnected with a side wall of a tub and swung from a lowered position in covering relation to the tub to a raised position where it will be out of the way when the tub is to be used for bathing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wash basin disposed over an opening in the cover and allow water to be conveyed from the faucet of the tub through a nozzle into the basin when the hands or face are to be washed.
Another object of the invention isvto so mount the basin that it'may be moved downwardly close to the cover and releasably 'retained in a depressed position so that it will not be liable to strike a wall close to which the tub is disposed and prevent the cover from being swung upwardly to such an angle that it will remain raised.
Another object of the invention is to allow the cover to be easily detached from a tub and transferred to another.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of the cover applied to a tub; I
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the cover and tub to which it is applied;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the cover and a portion of the'tub;
Fig. 1 is a bottom-plan view of a portion of the cover, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the manner of connecting the nozzle with the cover.
The cover, which is indicated in general b the numeral 1, is preferably formed of strong sheet metal having its upper or outer surface enameled to provide a good appearance. This cover conforms to the contour of a tub 2 of a conventional construction and at its ends and along one side is formed with a bordering flange 3 to rest upon the rolled upper ends of the walls of the tub. At its other side the cover is provided with hinge ears or sleeves 1 to receive a pivot pin 5 which extends through companion hinge sleeves or ears 6 of a hinge leaf 7 By referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the hinge leaf 7 is curved transversely and has its free side portion hooked, as shown at 8,
so that it may be engaged beneath the rolled upper end portion of the tub wall adjacent to a wall of a bathroom. Therefore, the cover will be hingedly connected to the tub and may be swung from a lowered position. in covering relation to the tub, as shown in Fig. 2, to a raised position in which the cover will rest against a wall of the bath room and due to its angular position remain raised, as shown in'Fig. 3. A recess 9 is formed in one end of the cover so thataccess may be had to the turning handles 10 of the faucet 11- when the cover is in the-lowered position. I'have also cut tongues from the cover and bent them downwardly to provide soap-receiving pockets 9 and 9 The basin 12 which is to be used when washing the hands or face is disposed over an opening 13 formed in the cover and rest upon springs 14 through which bolts 15 pass. The bolts also pass through openings formed in the cover and marginal rim or flange of the basin so that expansion of the springs will be controlled and the basin retained in connection with the cover. A drain opening 16 is formed in the bottom of the basin and may be closed by a stopper 17 intended to be removed after the basin has been used so that water in the basin may flow tliroughthe drain opening into the tub and out of the tub through its outlet 18. In order to supply water to the basin, there has been provided a nozzle 19 which passes through an opening 20 formed in the cover and has its'lower end engaged with arubber hose 21 leading from the faucet 11. By this arrangement hot or cold water or. a combination of hot and cold water of a suit able temperature may be allowed to pass from the faucet through the pipe 21 and nozzle 19'into the basin. The pipe may be easily detached either from the faucet or the lower end of the nozzle when the cover is to be swung upwardly to a raised position and the nozzle lifted out of the opening 20 so that it will not strike the wall.
When thecover is swung upwardly to a raised position, it is desirable to have the basin moved to a position in close Proximity to the outer or upper face of the cover and retained. in this position so that it will not strike the wall and damage the wall or prevent the cover from assuming an angular position in which it will not be liable to accidentally drop to a closed position. In order to do so, I have provided a yoke 22 which is preferably rectangular in shape and at one corner is engaged with a clip 23 and thereby pivotally connected with the cover. At its side corners the yoke carries grapples 24 which extend upwardly through openings in the cover and have hooked upper ends which are engaged with the rim or flange of the basin and preferably disposed in openings formed therein. The wire from which the yoke is formed has its end portions joined at the forward corner of the yoke, as shown at 25, and one end portion extends upwardly through an opening 26 in the cover to provide a shank 27 constituting an actuating element for the yoke. A head 28 is formed at the upper end of the shank so that pressure may be easily applied thereto and the yoke swung downwardly to cause the grapples to exert a pulling action against opposite side portions of the. basin and thereby move the basin to a depressed position, as shown in F ig. 3. When the yoke is depressed, the walls of the opening 26 are on gaged in the seat or annular recess 29 and p the yoke will be releasably secured against upward movement. Therefore, the basin will be retained in the depressed position and there will be no danger of its striking a wall and causing damage to the wall or preventing the cover from assuming the proper angular position.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A tub cover comprising a body having marginal portions adapted to rest upon walls of a tub with the body in covering relation to the tub, a basin, resilient means yieldably supporting said basin in an elevated position above an opening in the body, means to move the basin downwardly against the action of said resilient means and releasably retain the basin in a depressed position, and means to conduct water from a tub faucet into said basin.
2. A tub cover comprising a body adapted to be supported upon a tub with the body disposed over the tub, said body having an opening formed therein, a basin, re- 7 silient means yieldably supporting said basin in an elevated position above the opening in said body, and means to move the basin downwardly and releasably retain the basin depressed. p 3. A tub cover comprising a body having marginal portions adapted to rest upon wallsof a tub, said body having an opening formed therein, a basin, means yieldably supporting said -basin above the opening in said body, and actuating means carried by said body and engaged with said basin to move the basin downwardly, said actuating means including a latch to releasably retain the same in an adjusted position with the basin depressed.
4. A tub cover comprising a. body having marginal portions adapted to rest upon walls of a tub withthe body in covering relation to the tub, a basin, resilient means normally supporting the basin in an elevated position above the body, actuating means to move the basin towards the body to V a depressed position against the action of said resilient means, and means to releasably retain the actuating means in an adjusted position with the basin depressed.
5. A tub cover comprising'a body having marginal portions to rest upon walls of a tub, a basin above said body, supporting springs for the basin between the basin and body, a yoke pivoted to the under face of said body, grapples carried by said yoke and extending upwardly through the body and engaged with the basin to draw the basin to a depressed posit-ion when the yoke is swung downwardly, and a latch to releasably hold. the yoke in a lowered position.
6. A tub cover comprising a body having marginal portions to rest upon walls of a tub, a basin above said body, supporting springs for the basin between the basin and body, ayoke pivotally connected with the under'face of the body, grapples connected with said yoke and extending upwardly through the body and engaged avith the basin, and a latch arm extending upwardly from said yoke through the body and hav ing a seat to engage the body andrelcasably hold the yoke in a depressed position.
'In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
