T0 all-whom it may concern:
-Be it known that 1, CHARLES a citizen of the United states, and resident of'New York New York and State of New' York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachmentsfor Bathtubs, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto attachments for; bathtubs, particularly to devices for permit! ting'the raising of the water level in such tubs abovethe overflow discharge openings thereof In'bathtubs' of the types of construction now prevailing the overflow discharge open-- ing is such a smalldistance from the bottom of the tube that a'person of normal propordifiiculttoimmerse his knees and shoulders in the water, particularly if the tub is not of full'length. I proposein this invention to provide a closure for the overflow opening so that the level i of the water'may beraised several inches beyond the said opening, thus rendering complete submersion of the body possible. I I propose, further, to associate with the said closure-a means for permitting the flow of water through the discharge opening when the level of the water in the tub exceeds a predetermineddistance above the said opening. This feature of the attachment prevents an overflow of the water and renders a continuous renewal of the water possible.
Certain other objects and features of the invention will be apparent from the following description of one form of embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a view showing in side elevation one form of apparatus embodying my invention in operative position on a bathtub, and r Fig. 2 is a view showing in front elevation one of the members of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a similar view of another member of Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference designate similar parts in each of the several views.
The attachment of my invention is shown in full lines in Fig. 1, applied for the purpose hereinbefore stated to a bathtub 1, shown in dot and dash lines, which tub is provided overflow discharge opening 2 which com- HER AN in the county-of adjacent its upper edge with an ATTACHMENT Eon ZBATI ITUBS.

municates with a discharge pipe 3.;
ply, of hot and cold water are indicated ;in the drawing and comprise the pipe member 5 which-extends to the opening cup-shaped or concave member 6 an elevation of which, looking to the left in Figi 1", is shown in Fig. 2; The diameter ofthe face of {this'member islarger than that of the opening 2, so that it covers the same completely. AL- washer 16 of rubber, felt, or other suitable material is partially embedded in'the rim ofthe-"member 6, to renderthe,
closure of the opening substantially water tight. A helical spring 7 has one end attached to the back ofmemb er 6 and the other end affixed to a plate 8 which is provided as shown in Figs. 2and with a semiecy'lin V drical' strip 9.
This strip engages the pipe ;5 when the attachment is placed into position and the spring 7 serves to press into engagement with the wall of the bathtub, thus retaln ng'the attachment in place.
A tube 12 extends vertically frommember'ta and communicates therewith'by a-hole 14; in the concave wall of the cup.
of the tube. A cover 13 Fig. 2, is provided for the top of tube 12 so that an even higher The" usual pipe and valve fixtures 4: for thesup vertically downward close 2. The attachment of the" present invention comprises a substantially This tube serves to' ermitthe discharge of water into nipe 3 when the water level reaches the top the member 6 firmly water level may be attained, .when desired, 7
1 sition or removed from the tub. The flanges 11 are preferably curved sufiiciently to accommodate the index fingers between them and the wall of the tub, to permit the attachment to be readily grasped when the same is in position.
The distance through which the water level may be raised in the tub depends of course on the length of tube 12, when the same is used without the cover 13, and in the average case a distance of several inches will be found suflicient to cover the knees and shoulders of the bather and thus avoid the chilling thereof which would otherwise ensue, particularly if the water is hot and the air-cold. t r qv.
Although I have shown and described herein only one form and arrangement of apparatus embodying my invention, it is ,departingfrom the spirit and scope of the invention.
, What I claim is: I V I r .'1;;In a device-for permitting the raising of the water level in a bathtub above the overflow discharge opening thereof, which comprises a substantially cup-shaped member for covering said opening, a washer associated therewith for rendering said covering substantially watertight, a tube extend ing upward from said member for permitting flow of water into said discharge pipe when the level thereof reaches the top of said tube, a member for engaging the water inlet pipe of the tub, said member having a semi cylindrical surface substantially conforming to the surface of said pipe, a coiled spring having its end attached, to said above-mentioned members, and arranged to pressthe same into their respective positions, and flanges on the said members whereby the said spring may be compressed and the said device placed into, and out of operative position. r r
2; In a device for permittingthe raising of the waterlevel in a bathtub above the overflow discharge opening thereof, a member for covering said opening, a helical spring having one end secured to said member, and means associated with the other end of said spring for engaging the water inlet pipeof said tub, V
3. In a shield for the overflow opening of bathtubs, a substantially cup-shaped member for covering said opening, a member for engaging the Water inlet fixture of the tub, and resilient means for operatively associating said members. p 4. In'an overflow attachment for tubs, a member for covering said opening, a member for engagingthe water inletfixture of the tub, a resilient device for urging said members away from each other, and flanges 'ing arranged to permit the flow of water through said opening when the Waterlevel exceeds a predetermined distance above the said opening, and a member associated with said attachment for engaging the water inlet pipe of the tub to hold the said covering member in operative position.
v 6.111 a deviceof the character described, a substantially cup-shaped covering member, apipe extending vertically therefrom, said pipe being arranged to permit the flow of water through said covering member, 'a
member for engaging the water inlet fixture of thetub, and a helical'spring, having its ends associated with said members for retaining the same in operative position.
vSignedat New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this first day. of March, A. D. 1920.
